It is hard to put into words how I feel about this book. Wow. My heart aches for every single character. Beautiful. Until about the second to last chapter. There was a lot going on, and you lost me. I imagine everyone got their own kind of happily ever after.

Did not land the way I kind of expected it to. Undoubtedly well written for the most part, but almost too much so when it bleeds into the speech of some of the characters, who don't really feel like they should be (and mostly didn't) talking like that. Not bad, but just took me a while to read because I was never super engaged at any point. Not sure how I felt about the ghosts. Did end strong but it took a long while to get there, hence the 2 months it took me to finish.

I probably need to be a little more careful understanding where the hype is coming from for some of these newer literary books, because the crossover from BookTok into more literary stuff can get me interested, but let me down at times, like we did here I think.

finishing this book with tears in my eyes… so incredibly heavy yet written with a beautiful, airy, rhythmic, flow. it really encapsulates the push and pull of strained familial relationships, wanting so badly to hate them for what they do but not being able to fully blame them as they are victims in their own stories.

The format of each chapter being from a different POV is definitely not my favorite but it added so much depth to the characters to really dissect their own narratives and get a look into why things unfold the way they do.

Jojo, Kayla, Pop and Mam really make this book worth reading, reminding that it’s not all dark… they are the most lovable characters and their connections fill you with so much warmth.

This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Ward’s mastery of language and figurative speech makes her prose entrancing. This is Southern Gothic at its peak! 10/10!
