These books have interesting plot and great setting. Her portrayal of the main characters is odd--Perez is a weird mixture of extremely competent and a dork. Taylor, the guy they send in from the mainland for big cases is a basket case--a ridiculous egoist and something of a baffoon. I'll try one more, but I hope she hits her stride. The television series was significantly better (highly unusual) until Season 6 where it pretty much jumped the shark.

The mystery is a bit lost in the mundane details and slow exposition. I think I prefer the TV show…but perhaps this isn’t typical of the series.

Really didn't see the end coming. The pace is a little slow, lots of description but it gives a sense of the place
I kinda just gave up caring about this book and it's characters and almost synthetic finish it. If only the books were as intriguing and beautiful as the show.

Graphic: Death, Violence, Murder
It’s midsummer in the Shetland Islands, the time of the white nights, when birds sing at midnight and the sun never sets. Artist Bella Sinclair throws an elaborate party to launch an exhibition of her work at The Herring House, a gallery on the beach.
The party ends in farce when one the guests, a mysterious Englishman, bursts into tears and claims not to know who he is or where he’s come from. The following day the Englishman is found hanging from a rafter, and Detective Jimmy Perez is convinced that the man has been murdered. He is reinforced in this belief when Roddy, Bella’s musician nephew, is murdered, too.
The second fabulous Mystery from Shetland, a cosy meandering story that leads you alongside to the conclusion scene by scene without too much work needing to be done to solve the crime.
Shetland again plays a huge role in the story and I would love to visit from the descriptions in the book it sounds beautiful.
Loving the character progression of the regular cast intreagued to read the follow on books.
