needs more Russians

This is just a fantastic world. I was so fascinated with the weird west setting Charlaine Harris created. It fascinated me to no end. And I enjoyed following the adventures of Lizbeth Rose. Just an entertaining read all around. Looking forward to the next one.

Alt-western with magic and cynicism, smoothly-written and very readable. Not a ton of major surprises but nicely twisty.

So I’m mixed on my feelings on this book. I enjoyed the main character and how strong and smart she is. However, all the build up about her past and nothing really happened when the truth came out. I was expecting more.

A different type of fantasy story - but that is to be expected from this author. Well worth the read and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Excellent start to a new series!

I loved the characters and the world building and the story! It was a great start to a new series and I can’t wait to see where this story goes. I really hope we haven’t seen the last of Eli.

Great voice for the main character and really like the world building. The pace of the story wanders a bit, slowing the action without benefiting character building or setting up a future payoff. Overall a good solid read.

3.5/5

I have been hoping Charlaine Harris would come out with a new series that can become my new guilty pleasure, but this one isn’t it.

What I liked:

* I liked the concept of an alternate history

* This, like all of Harris’ work, is very easy to read and Harris has a knack for drawing you into a story

What I didn’t like:

* This is just a personal preference, but I didn’t like that there wasn’t an established central location - it was very much a travelling story where the location was constantly changing

* I didn’t connect with any of the characters and the relationship between Gunnie and Eli I just didn’t feel at all

* The alternate history felt a little overdone, interesting but not executed in a believable way

Fun New Fantasy World

This is the first "Western" fantasy I've seen since the Devil's West series by Laura Anne Gilman (which I also liked). In this book, I thought Harris build a really creative world with some interesting twists. I liked the main characters and found the book fun to read. For me, the pace of the story worked: despite it being a "gunslinger" kind of novel, every scene isn't a fight scene (or a segue to a fight scene). It's more action-packed than Harris' Midnight Texas series, but doesn't build an ensemble cast like that series did: here, the main character is Gunnie Rose. While the end is satisfying (no cliff-hanger), there is a lot of room for the story to expand in later books.

This one was very meh.
