so very happy i finally got to reading her work as she’s been on my radar for what feels like forever - she is such an incredible owner of words and stories and i feel lucky to have even read this, especially having been able to listen to the audiobook in her own voice - as someone who has had immense struggles with weight and body image my entire life, this was such an enlightening experience. i often found myself with my jaw open as i heard roxane explain thoughts and behaviors of hers and that matched mine identically. i highly highly reccomend this to ever woman, every feminist, and everyone who has ever despised the they way they look because others and society have told them they should. utterly incredible.
Listened on audiobook. Truly appreciate Roxane’s courage to tell her stories - I cannot imagine how difficult it is to relive and articulate those memories. It put humanity back to every being regardless of their status, appearance, or personal history.
Fantastic memoir. Cuts straight to the heart with powerful short essays/chapters. Speaks the truth of her body and her experience, an experience to which I relate.
I am a memoir addict, and this is in my top 5 memoirs of all time. I don't know if I have ever been as honest and transparent with even my dearest as Roxane is with her readers in Hunger.
At 12 years old, Roxane was gang-raped by the boy she loved and his friends whose names she did not know. To protect herself, to make herself invisible to men, she began to eat. She built her body to be a fortress. Years and hundreds of pounds later, she explains what it's like to move through the world in her body, and her efforts to discipline her "unruly body."
Second book of the year for me, and another one that I think everyone should read.

Gay has done a phenomenal job baring her soul for the reader to understand her experience in this world as a fat woman and how her trauma and cultural expectations have shaped her worldview. I’m grateful she chose to share her story, in all its brutal honesty, with us.
I'll never look fat people the same way after have read this book, which upset me deeply. And I hope the world will be better for our daugthers than it has been for Roxanne.
I listened to the audio narrated by the author herself.
Going into this, I knew absolutely nothing about Roxane Gay except that she was "that feminist lady". This book was an eye-opening look at her past and how her past brought her where she is today, how her past impacted her body.
At times I felt she was a bit repetitive but I overall was very engaged in what she had to say. Her struggles with her body, her image, and what it was that got her her are so incredibly sad, but relatable. You could tell that she didn't write this book easily, how hard it was for her to tell her story.
I appreciate what she's done here and I appreciate she took the time to wear her past and her struggles on her sleeve. Thank you, Roxane!
