As all of Gay’s work, Hunger challenges the reader to think about complicated issues of femininity, body image, sexuality, and violence from different angles. Hunger is the story of one woman’s relationship to her body and to a society with lots of opinions about that body, but it resonated with me strongly despite the fact that Gay’s body is in many ways different from mine. I found it fascinating and disturbing to read about the many contradictory ways that Gay relates to her body and to extrapolate from there about how women all over the world spend so much time and emotional energy worrying about their bodies and others’ perceptions of and control over them. What a drain on our intellectual capacities.

This book is devastating and amazing. If you are now, or ever have been obese, this book hits home in multiple ways. Though I have lived most of my adult life as an obese individual, this book made me really think about how many ways in which daily life and society are way harder for those who are heavier than I am. Her writing is amazing. Best book I have read so far in 2018.

A tough read—quick but difficult. It may be the most naked writing I’ve ever encountered. It exposed me to entirely new and unacknowledged struggles I’d never even realized existed; it was challenging to read anecdotes of the struggles of people who are very different from me. What makes this book a masterwork is that it highlights the oft-ignored truth that, despite our differences, we struggle with similar issues in similar ways. I feel respect for the author, compassion for her lifelong struggle, and most of all admiration for her refusal to give up after so many years of unending strife.

Already one of my top books of the year!!! Clearly shows how trauma can physically affect the body and alter one’s mindset. I’ve held the belief since I was very young that the majority of people who experience sudden weight gain (or loss) is have hard moment in life. Not always, but it’s easy to care for one’s health when life has been turned upside down. I’ve learned a lot of what it means to be in a bigger body and privileges that I wasn’t even aware.
All my respect goes to Roxanne and my deepest condolences. I wish her nothing but the best.
