Shoya is incredibly stupid and flawed and I’m just really obsessed with this story still ☹️☹️☹️

There is a joy in how Oima poses the internal conflict and questioning of his characters in this series. Although I have a a decade one the characters, their self-evaluations of their past, present, and potential future causes me to question eras of my own life and how I pursue others and experiences.

Am I genuine, or trying to sway something the way I think it needs to be swayed? Am I overstepping, or not engaging enough? Is it possible to dismiss, destroy, or ignore my past self in order to no longer be that person (even if it was a growing stage for me, and I learned things the hard way)? Am I surrounded by those who are a blessing, instead of toxic? Am I doing what is expected of me, instead of what I want for me?

What is striking, but not surprising, is how this balance within self-discovery is shown through the Deaf lens. There are those in the world that expect the Deaf to be passive, and innocent of anger. Yet, as we have seen in this series (and in real life), the Deaf community like the hearing world is moving on from a passive state within their own lives to one that is active. It is a stage in the coming of age experience that happens at different points of each individual timeline.

I am glad that it is happening for our leads while they are in their teens, as much as I am glad to see it happen when someone is in their later years!

What will be in store after a final scene that was touching as it was aching? Only one way to find out!

Not everything can be fixed with time and good intentions.

Shoko is interested in reconnecting with people from her past, and Shoya is willing to help her, searching for a former classmate. The search goes well, and soon the girls meet again and happily resuming an abruptly ended friendship, which encourages Shoya to get in touch with another girl he used to be somewhat friends with, Naoka.

But Naoka is as much of a bully as Shoya himself used to be. She's jealous, petty, aggressive, and won't take "no" for an answer, nor does she seem to want to change. (Will she become an antagonist, I wonder?)
