Being from a small and very similar town in North Dakota myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. 7 bars in a town of 900 is no exaggeration! There were so many moments in the book where I thought "that is spot on" I am familiar with all of the towns mentioned in the book (with the exception of Owl of course) and that was a lot of fun for me cuz "who rights books about North Dakota?" Anyways, if anyone is curious as to what its like to live in a place like this, I recommend it!

Being from a small town there is so much to relate to in this book and remind me why the fuck I got out of there.

I really like Klosterman for his pop-culture commentary. His fiction? No. I think the worst thing was his dialog. None of it seemed like anything that would actually come out of people's mouths. He tried to give certain characters ticks like "this is the situation, the situation is this" but it just got annoying. The constant explanation of things through an a) b) c) system got old.

Ugh.

Oh man I have missed me some Klosterman! This was the first fiction book of his I read and the first book of his I read in many many years. It reminded me of WHY I absolutely love his writing because it really makes you think. Brb going on a Klosterman binge reading now.

Not my favorite read, had higher expectations... I found the cat scene really disturbing.

"Julia took two more sips of her gin and tonic. It tasted like a christmas tree soaked in gasoline."

got through about 150 pages and decided I had better ways to spend my time. The authors humor is interesting, more situational than anything but if nothing is happening after nearly half the book is finished I'm going to move on.

It had Klosterman's writing style, for sure, and there were plenty of odd insights about mid to late 80's rural life (which is his forte), but at the end of it all, it seemed a bit aimless and hollow. And the ending? Kind of an odd way to end the book. If you're a Klosterman fan, it's obviously a must read, but if you are looking to experience his work, I'd start elsewhere.
