The first couple chapters of this book rang false to me (among other things, Coupland screwed up some details of L.A. geography, which is a big no-no to this Angeleno) but amazingly, it won me back and won me big time. I did believe in both Susan and John by the end, and in their journeys, and I love that Coupland doesn't make cartoon villains out of his antagonists—even Susan's beast of a mother is afforded some sympathy. I guess in the end it's the emotional geography that counts.
Giving this novel a star rating is beyond my abilities. As I've mentioned before, Douglas Coupland's writing has shaped how I talk and think, so re-visiting his books - this is maybe my fourth time through Miss Wyoming? - is an experience as comforting (and intense) as reading through old journals.

A rollicking mover of a mystery/romance/comedy involving a child actress grown up, her various lovers and a cast of misfits (including her stage mother). Thrill of the chase, to say the least. I loved Coupland's disruption of the time element, as each chapter marks a different stage of the characters' lives, but I found it easy to follow.
A quibble: A car accident in Colorado Springs would not have disrupted traffic between Denver and Cheyenne. Grr. Sincerely, a former Wyomingite.
Miss Wyoming is a good read - Coupland's books usually are; but it bring nothing new to what I know about him as a writer and follows the same pattern as many of his other books. Good enough, but hardly thrilling.
I have no idea why or when I read this book. It's not the kind of book I usually read. But I did read it and some of it stuck with me through the years. When I faintly remembered some plot points I decided to find out from which book they were from and it turned out it was this.
Overall I do not remember that I took an exceptionally liking to this book. Probably because, again, this is not the kind of book I usually read. It was an OK story, but I don't think I really liked the two protagonists.

A love story for broken people, it tells the story of a former child star and a movie producer forming a bond over mysterious pasts. Told in alternating points of view, it jumps from the past to the present as it tells about their pasts and how it brought them together.
The characters are wonderfully written and the story-telling superb. This could be classified a "Hollywood romance," but that would be selling it so short. It's just two people coming to realize that they have not been in the driver seats of their lives up until this point.
It's a very wonderful and surreal story.
