The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library selected this book as the adult book for its 2024 Community Read, and I'm so glad it did.

This book is chef Edward Lee's exploration of food across the U.S., especially food from immigrant cultures. Each chapter includes recipes at the back. The book focuses on travel, food, immigrant experience and identity, and I can definitely see myself returning to it, especially if I end up in any of the cities Lee visits.

I wanted to read a feel good book about food and this delivered. Its food porn in written form. Very simliar to a TV shows that in each episode eat in a different American city.

Despite visiting all the current Food/TV hotspots-Paterson NJ, Dearborn Michigan, the book held my attention.

Stories about Vietnamese shrimp farmers in the Texas Gulf, Nigerians in Houston etc were new to me.
The recipes at the end of the chapters, refreshingly without photos seem good and I want to try out a few.

Great entertainment for the millennial soul.

Interesting! Should have expected it but trigger warning for lots of meat descriptions, not for me. Otherwise lots of stories about amazing people and foods as well as the author’s own life and experiences.

A well-written and thought-provoking look at what it means to be American and how food traditions evolve alongside Americanization.
