I know I saw somewhere that this is “romance” but I don’t know, it feels more like a coming of age story which has a touch of romance. I wouldn’t say it’s romantic in any way, the characters have their own problems, they fall in and out of friendship/love, it’s heartbreaking.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this book. I had high expectations due to what I'd heard about the new Netflix serie and wanted to read it before watching.

The ending was not what I expected. I was definitely rooting for Em, but I was conflicted about Dex. I couldn't decide if he genuinely cared for Em or if he just wanted to keep her close and use her when it suited him/had no one else to help and care for him.

As I approached the end of the book, I then realised how truly Dex felt when he recounted their story and his emotions when they met.

I particularly enjoyed the structure of the book, with its dual perspectives and the chapters marking each anniversary of their initial meeting.

This book makes me think of how lucky I am to have such wonderful friendships and that’s all I have to say.

I’m torn, because this book is a great premise and artfully written but Dex is so unlikeable for most of it and the
random tragic event
that was not in keeping with the blurb infuriated me. So I down-rated it…

Well that emotionally destroyed me...

Spoiler wrapping so I can write without thinking about it

We follow Emma and Dexter on July 15th every year from the day day they first met. I was rooting for them from the beginning and really grew to care about them as characters. The characters were lovable, but not necessarily likeable at times. But that makes them more human.

I enjoyed the mixed narrative of both of their stories when they were apart and the way they interlinked or didnt interlink. When they had fallen out, the alternate chapters without mention of the other worked really well.

The sigh of relief I felt when they finally got together and the happy fuzzy feeling I felt reading about their time together was so lovely!

DAVID HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO US.

I felt desperately sorry for Dexter in the final chapters. It was a privilege watching him mature into the person we see towards the end if the book. I wish him and Emma had more time together.

Admittedly, wasn'  the hugest fan of Dexter ending up with the girl from the bisto.  Him not ending up with anyone in the book timeline would have felt more honest to the storyline. The bistro girl made it feel too rushed!

AND THE LETTER HE WROTE HER AT THE BEGINNING! My God, if he had sent it and admitted to his feelings and told her how much he loved her, their whole entire story would have been so different.
