DID NOT FINISH

Putting this one down. It's just not for me. I might come back and try again but at this point I'm not emotionally invested in the characters or the plot(s). I was disappointed it wasn't going to be cute and then the spice I was promised never came. I was so excited to read this so I'm sad about not enjoying this.

thanks to the publisher and libro.fm for the audio copy!!

This was a fun read, definitely giving cozy fantasy romance for the summer/fall transitional season! A tinge on the long side but I don't feel like anything was really in the book that didn't need to be at the same time so maybe I just get bored easily (I do)

Hart's job is like, bringing in these dead bodies that were reanimated but that he subsequently rekilled, I guess? They bring them in to funeral parlors, and Mercy's family happens to own one of the funeral parlors Hart frequents. And Hart and Mercy do not like each other, at alllll.

Hart is your typical closed-off guy, went through one traumatic event in his life, makes it everyone's problem

Mercy's favorite color is literally yellow, you do the math

They have a whole secret penpal plotline in which they like each other whilst corresponding and neither of them knows they're talking to each other whomst they hate .... i will read this trope a million and one times i don't care i love the idea of secretly getting to know your enemy and finding out he's hot and a little mushy, like a good oatmeal

There's fun side characters, queer couples, anthropomorphic animals who deliver the mail, really I don't have much to say to recommend against this!! If you like your romance with a little pinch of otherworldliness, this one is a good pick

I loved this weird and wonderful romance slash fantasy slash macabre western with a dash of mystery and a sprinkle of mythology so much. It did take me the first 150 pages or so to really get into it but once I was in I could not put it down and am not remotely surprised that I cried like a baby. It really packs a feelings punch! I also sort of love how the world building was kind of…just not done? Bannen assumes her readers know what she means and offers no explanations and I was surprisingly here for it—I think it really works here.

Ow my heart

Honestly, this isn’t the book’s fault. The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy is a genuinely lovely book. It’s honestly well written and it’s sweet, witty and funny and quirky, but in a cute way. I’m just not the target audience and on top of that I’m in the middle of a really bad reading slump and this book just isn’t doing it for me. But I think most other people would have a really great time with this, especially if you enjoyed books like Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries and the dynamic between the two leads.
