Alright it’s done, I- this book was a god damn roller coaster. There were so many times I went maybe we should not finish this but also it was very well written, good enough I wondered if the author had perhaps done some of these things in real life Lol. The way I physically felt ill with some descriptions I really honestly don’t know how I feel about this book still. Am I glad it’s over? Yes. Do I think I will ever read it again?? Maybe... Certainly splatter punk at its finest

Playground was highly recommended on Booktok as being nearly unreadable due to the triggering content, so naturally, I had to pick it up. I was hoping for something truly cringeworthy, possibly along the lines of Samuel Delany's Hogg. In this, I was disappointed. Beauregard's writing lacks the description and style necessary to make Playground feel truly depraved and disgusting. While what he writes is disturbing, it just wasn't written in a way that I found frightening or that made my insides twist with disgust.

Would I read another Beauregard book? Yes, absolutely. He is clearly enjoying what he writes and I support that.

I know about splatterpunk and that’s okay but this just feels like everything only happens for shock value and so fast that you get “desensitised”
Feels like it was written by an edgy middle schooler, topic and style wise
