When I first came across this book, it was during it's craze on booktok. Reviewers professed it was the most disturbing thing they'd read, so what did I do? Added it to my TBR immediately.

I was SERIOUSLY disappointed. Except for that page46 part, the rest was particularly tame, but maybe I'm just seriously desentised. I dunno.

If Saw, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Squid Game had a deranged lovechild, this would be it. The story is off the charts gory, twisted, and relentless. The main character is sick and depraved, you hate her instantly.

This was my first splatterpunk read and I’m officially obsessed. Aron Beauregard doesn’t just push boundaries he obliterates them.
I need Playground: Child of Divorce right now!!!

This was not my favorite novel by Aron. I did not enjoy the pacing and felt it went on a bit too long. I wish the novel focused more on Donnie and Rock. The last few chapters were great when we got to know them a bit more. I did like that it was a happy ending.

I picked this up because it's written by a Rhode Island author and I love supporting local talent. I was also curious after seeing it blow up on TikTok, especially for the infamous page 40.

Let me just say, page 40 isn’t even the worst of it. Pages 40 to 48 were some of the most disturbingly graphic content I’ve ever read. I seriously debated putting the book down. It crossed a line from shocking into just plain revolting.

Outside of that section, the story feels like a mix of Saw and Squid Game, full of deadly puzzles and traps where one wrong move can be fatal. The premise is genuinely compelling, but I wish the execution had been a bit more balanced.

As my first splatterpunk read, I expected more nuance. The descriptions of the rooms and deaths often felt unnecessarily long, which dulled their impact and made it hard to stay emotionally invested. The deaths were interesting though.

Much of the book focuses on abuse, and many characters seem written purely to provoke anger or disgust. I’m not a fan of stories where suffering is the only point, it just didn’t work for me.

I ended up reading it in a day just so I could move on and not dwell on it longer than necessary.
