Thank you to Hear Our Voices Tours for providing me with this ebook!
5/5. I loved this book! It was a powerful story of love and activism in the civil rights era. We get to see the characters experience some of the tumultuous events during that time. The book has some historical inaccuracies, but that did not deter my enjoyment of the book. Anita and Jason were both likable MCs, and I found myself rooting for them throughout the book. The way they come together and realize that their difference in ideals is not a deterrent to their love is well written. I also enjoyed the inclusion of some historical images and links to historical speeches. It is a must-read!

I’d say a 3.5 rounded down, as the writing was really basic and I had a hard time getting in to. It felt a bit like YA writing, for an adult book. I liked the first 2/3 of the book a lot more than the last 1/3.

Jason, an acolyte of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has come up from the South to recruit volunteers to the cause of nonviolent resistance. In Harlem he meets Anita, who waits tables and writes poetry and is active in the movement begun by Malcolm X. The romance between these two is sweet and sexy, but watching them hash out their very real philosophical differences brings it to another level. And this book is so atmospheric! I felt totally transported to the 1960s. My favorite part was the many song references--I made a playlist and it really added to my enjoyment, 10/10 would recommend.

Swoony and powerful romance-- from an author who lived through these years! Definitely a must-read.

I thoroughly enjoyed how this book revolved around two contrasting movements, providing an intriguing dynamic. However, I found myself perplexed by Jason's beliefs. While he consistently advocates for nonresistance, his decision to join the army in the end and participate in an ambiguous war seemed contradictory. Personally, I aligned more with Anita's perspective. Nevertheless, this book captured my heart. It was far from boring! I was pleasantly surprised by the author's skillful blend of politics and romance, creating a captivating narrative.

Historical Fiction set during the Civil Rights Era/Romance...swooning. Donna Hill did a great job painting the picture of the time that made me feel like I had taken a trip in a time machine. I loved how she developed the characters as well as their love. This was a great read.
