The story was too clichéd in my opinion. The romance was unrealistic with no real-life complications while any unpleasant mysterious events were casually explained away in a few lines. I was actually quite bored towards the end. The angle on sports injuries seemed like an extra thrown into the mix when it had the potential to be the central theme.
Poppy is a single mother with a ten year old son. She has a crappy job waitress in a skimpy outfit at a men’s club. She’s convinced herself that she actually loves her job and that she doesn’t need anyone.
But Poppy was only a high school senior when she got pregnant by her boyfriend TK. Her parents disowned her, she lost her chance at college and her boyfriend’s mother paid for her to get an abortion. Poppy didn’t go through with it and she didn’t tell TK that she was still pregnant. So she cut all ties with him and changed her phone number.
She was entirely on her own aside from her aunt Maya who took her in.
Now Maya is gone and it’s just Poppy and her son Ace.
Then one day, TK shows up at the club. Poppy tries to run away before he sees her and the reaction surprises TK. He feels like Poppy abandoned him ten years ago and he can’t understand why *she* doesn’t want to see *him*. He thinks she’s the one that ran away.
So, there was definitely a lack of communication ten years ago. It’s not too shocking to figure out what actually happened.
TK wants a second chance with Poppy and she knows she had to tell him about Ace before things get serious.
He’s briefly upset and then turns into the perfect boyfriend and father.
But Poppy is already used to losing most everyone she loves and she is very afraid of it happening again. She has major walls up around her heart.
I thought this was cute but I wasn’t super into it.

Fumbled is an improved sequel to Intercepted. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the unknown pregnancy and child but it was handled okay. TK is in general very sweet and you will find yourself rooting for him and Poppy. I didn’t care for the delivery of the 3rd act breakup. I was so happy to see Donny return in this book, I find him so entertaining- he would’ve been an interesting love interest in the series. Overall, this book is a fun read.
Moderate: Stalking
This was perfectly adequate. The premise was engaging and the execution was fine. I struggled with this trying to exist in the same world as Intercepted because it felt like retcon. The choice of conflict was...interesting. I think more time with the reunification of Poppy, TK, and Ace would have made for a more interesting/engaging read. Furthermore, the conflict that was introduced was much too dramatic to be resolved so quickly, imo. But ultimately a sweet story.
It takes a really good story for me to enjoy the secret baby trope. This one delivered. Come to think of it, I also claim to dislike sports stories, but here we are.
Pros: A swoony boyfriend who is sensitive but also realistic with mood swings and anger issues. I really loved the work he went through to get them where they needed to be. The heroine is also complex and nuanced. I really liked being in her head.
Cons: I felt it ran a bit long, with numerous unnecessary scenes and subplots that didn't really contribute to the story.
The audiobook was good, but the narrator often didn't vary the voices enough for me to distinguish who was speaking during a conversation.
