Sigh. Another Alexa Martin book that just didn’t work for me. This book needed a stronger edit, as there were so many weird plot points and character tics that seemed so out of place. (A grown woman who throws glitter on people? The main character starting a serious conversation by sticking her tongue out playfully? WHAT.) There was a weird stalker side plot that didn’t move the story forward at all and didn’t need to be included. There was so much SCREAMING in this novel, too. I can’t remember the last time I just screamed in a restaurant while having dinner with friends... like, never? So odd! (And don’t even get me started on the secret baby trope. Oof.) I liked the discussion of CTE in football players and I did enjoy the chemistry between TK and Poppy, but otherwise, eh.
medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes

This was a steamy and fun football romance that I really enjoyed! Alexa Martin’s real life experience as an NFL wife really shines through in this novel that is chock full of insider details about how wives and girlfriends of these type of athletes coexist with this high-profile sport. The romance between TK and Poppy was sweet and swoon worthy and I can’t wait to read more in this series!

Alexa Martin’s books are so much fun! Loving reading about the football wife life.

Thoughts: Loved the story, really felt that I could connect with the characters, it flowed pretty well, wish I could've gotten more of a future epilogue, and more of the terrible decisions that the H's mother made. I didn't see any consequences and was hoping for more there. Otherwise, solid book.

It was fun, but no where near the “I cannot put this down!” magic as the first one.

Having enjoyed Intercepted, I admit coming to this story with high expectations. That is perhaps why I was so disappointed with the second installment in the Playbook series. There was a serious problem with tension building in the story, there were too many things thrown in but none of them amounted to much. Poppy and TK were involved in high school until she found herself pregnant with Ace. When they meet again he is a successful and rich football player while she struggles to make a living waitressing in a sleazy dive. Usually the secret baby trope comes with a series of misunderstanding between the main couple, but here it was diffused rather quickly when TK came to his senses and realized Ace is indeed his son.
There are two women who are sort of villainesses in the book both barely make a dent in the couples stride towards being together, a jealous co worker and the hero's mother. As both do a very poor job in keeping them apart another problem is introduced, the permanent damage from head injury in the sport. This was tackled better in another romance I've rad recently, The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai. Even the humor that made Intercepted such a fun read was missing here. So all in all, I think this series has a lot of potential if the author sticks to the lighthearted tone of the first novel, and the peeks to the life behind the scenes of the wives and girlfriends of the pro players.

A phenomenal second romance in Alexa Martin’s Playbook series. This book is multilayered and nuanced, and really digs into the health impacts of football alongside the romance A-plot. Martin strikes the perfect romance-series-balance of weaving in characters from Intercepted and introducing us to new ones. If you loved Intercepted, pick this up right away! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I picked up this book because I’m a sucker for the secret baby trope. Overall it was just ok for me. I normally enjoy a fast paced book but this was just way too fast. There were several drama thrown in but they all seem to just fizzle out. I also didn’t enjoy the football brain injury storyline. Also, the writing style just wasn’t doing it for me. I did appreciate how strong the female lead was.
