Did I like this one as much as JLB’s Raised by Wolves series? No. BUT! It was still a really awesome and fun book to read!

Things that I really like about this book:

1. Kali.
The girl is a kick-butt heroine. I mean she is the one that saves the day! There is no damsel in distress here! I love how JLB writes these characters. They are confident, yet at the same time vulnerable. How does she do that?!

2. Bethany and Skylar… really all of the characters for that matter.
I figured that I would hate Bethany. She’s your typical snotty cheerleader… or is she? I don’t know if I was supposed to like her character, but I did. She really surprised me, I wouldn’t use the word typical to describe her at all. And Skylar. That girl is something else. She’s that girl that I wish I could have been in high school. I mean, anyone who can take being labeled as the school slut and be so non-chalant about it, is my hero!

3. The story.
How cool is the whole every-other-day concept. I mean it’s so simple, yet it’s so genius!

I felt like I left this story with a lot more questions than I began with, but I’m hoping that will be addressed in future books. Assuming there will be future books. And the ending moved a little too fast for me and sort of fizzled out, but the very last pages DEFINITELY sucked me right back in.

Can’t wait for more!

Mini-Review: Full of intriguing characters and fascinating world building, Jennifer Lynn Barnes' Every Other Day has a special place in my heart, and it's right next to Buffy.

My Thoughts:

Kali D'Angelo is not like other girls. Even when she's human, she stays out of the spotlight and counts down the minutes until she's not, until she's something more. Kali thinks she's the only one of her kind. She's wrong.

I saw someone else's review on Goodreads where they compared Barnes' latest book to the episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer when Buffy loses her supernatural abilities, and I have to say the idea is similar. But unlike Buffy, who trains to make herself stronger and faster and smarter about the things she's facing, when Kali is human, she is completely human with no idea how to hunt, how to survive against anything supernatural; all she has are her instincts. And on top of that, she's being drained of life. That is what makes Every Other Day a fun, fresh read.

I think my favorite aspect of the novel is Kali's relationship with Zev because of how it unfolds. It starts as an occasional voice in her head and grows into something concrete. I love how Barnes pieces things together until you finally get to see the big picture. I can honestly say I didn't see everything with Zev coming, and I liked not being able to figure it out; it made it that much more enjoyable.

I thought there were a lot of really cool and original things in this book, especially the rewriting of history as it concerns Darwin's greatest finds. There were, however, some things that took away from the spectacular story that I can't really get into with being spoilery, and I hate being spoilery. So I will say there was one moment where something should have been very emotional, but for some reason it didn't really come through for me. There was a moment immediately beforehand that had me more involved and ready to cry but when the scene got intense, the emotions seemed to evaporate. It was a tad disappointing.

Actually, that one moment was really the only thing that bothered me about this book. I enjoyed the characters and their sudden involvement with one another; I enjoyed Kali's dual nature and the mystery surrounding it; and I particularly enjoyed how much it made me think of Buffy. If you were a fan of the show, or even of Supernatural, I would suggest giving Every Other Day a shot when it comes out. I'm glad I did.

And you think you have a hard time fitting in at school? Every other day, Kali is invincible; every other day, Kali is a vampire. Every other day, Kali is human.

Welcome to a world where preternatural creatures like hellhounds, zombies, and chupacabras not only exist but are accepted as fact. Kali D'Angelo, who lives with her dad, a professor who specializes in preternatural creatures and biology and whose mother has been gone since she was young, just tries to blend in (disappear) at school. But then she meets Skylar, the leader of a small group of social outcasts. And she notices cheerleader Bethany's ouroboros on the small of her back - the sign of a chupacabra bite. Bethany just happens to be Bethany Davis, daughter of Dr. Davis, the head of Dr. D'Angelo's university department. So Kali lures the chupacabra out of Bethany and into her own body. Then Zev shows up - inside her head. And someone "official" is after her as a specimen.

Bethany and Kali skip school, only to be joined by Skylar who has "a feeling" about things and declares herself "a little bit psychic". Kali must survive in her human form, hosting the chupacabra, until dawn. But at dawn, it doesn't die, and Kali is suddenly in clearer contact (still in her head) with the mysterious Zev.

Fast forward ... Plot to retrieve specimen injected by private company Chimera. Kali dies, then comes back to life. Busts into secret labs. Meets her mother again. Finds out what she is. Rescues Skylar from zombies. Meets Skylar's brothers. Finds some dirt on the Davis family, but is assisted by Bethany. Is determined to find and release Zev.

In the end? Well, I have to leave a few surprises. Not leaving for a surprise - Skylar lies about being "a little bit psychic"; she's actually "psychic a lot."

Every Other Day leaves room for a sequel but is also a great stand-alone book.

One problem with this book....NO SEQUEL! I understand wanting stand alones but the ending of that book made me expect a second book and when I found out there more than likely wouldn't be one, I was pissed!

The story is wonderful and I like the plot and idea and if there does end up being a sequel I will jump on it like a cow boy riding a horse! I want to read more about this!

Wow, I loved this book! This author is so talented!
I definitely didn't expect the main character to become a vampire (different than usual) and I liked the interesting take on the supernatural. There were many twists and turns making everything so much more exciting. For example, her moms were a SHOCK to me! This book was spectacular but...
Just one thing that she needed to do was add a bit more details because the ice skating rink incident was confusing... There were some words I didn't know like asinine, so I now know a new word BUT I hate learning vocab in books. Just hate it. Also, the ending was really the one open to interpretation. I hate that! Especially since this book was a stand-alone. D:

Tada! All of that eventually ended up to a 4 star!
I apologize for these asinine reviews; it's just that I'm not in the mood to write these reviews the moment I finish the book and after awhile I start to forget. SORRY! Promise I'll be keeping up with them, those who actually read these...

Kali isn't’t always human every other day she transform into a demon hunter that makes her strong and powerful. No one knows she’s different not even her father. When her father’s co-workers daughter shows up with a Chupacabra bite she does the only thing she can think to do and use her blood to call the bite into body. Assuming when she transforms the next day her blood will kill the Chupacabra healing her as good as new. The bite has a few side effects a voice in her head only she can hear and the craving for blood. All she has to do is make it through the day before she transforms and heals.

When the girls encounter a dragon that shouldn't be there to start with it also eats people as well as breath’s fire which is also not possible. Kali should know her day is going to be anything but easy. Kali learns that they injected girls with the Chupacabra in hopes of finding a viable specimen she just happens to be the one who has it. As if having to worry about making is through the day isn’t enough, she’s being hunted by the ones who gave Bethany the bite. When the chase ends in a crash they assume that Kali is dead having broken her neck they leave her on the road.

When she wakes up the craving to hunt is strong as is her craving for blood. While the bite doesn’t heal completely, it doesn’t kill her either. She quickly hunts down a basilisk and can’t fight the strong urge to drink its blood. The voice in her head’s name is Zev she learns that he’s like her but being held captive by Chimera Biomedical. She has only 24 hours to save Bethany and Zev before she’s human again as well as stop Chimera Biomedical?

I like Kali she’s got dealing with a lot being torn between two worlds not fitting into either. She’s my favorite kind of character “the flawed kick ass heroine” there is just something about them. I really connected with Kali she’s smart and strong and selfless risking her own life for that of someone she doesn’t know. The girls at school Bethany and Skyler are unique and enhance the story. I wasn’t sure about Zev but as the book progressed I found myself liking him too.

I’m not a huge demon fan so this week’s bingo had me a little nervous. I've had Every Other Day but since it’s a demon book it’s been on the back burner. The idea of Kali I found very interesting a girl who walks in two worlds human one day another demon slayer. The author has created engaging characters that you can’t help cheering on through the story. I found the whole story captivating from start to finish it’s an action packed story. The way the author mixes the human world with the monster world is unique and exciting. She’s filled the story with demons, dragons, crazy scientists, stranger silver eyed guys, cheerleaders, and tops it all off with zombies. Every Other Day was hard for me to put down it kept me on the edge of my seat till the very end. I know this is a standalone but I’d be curious to read more about Kali because I enjoyed her story.

I won a free copy along with Nobody but I have lost the link to which blog. If it was from you, let me know!

I hate when books I want to continue are stand alones while bloated and forced series perpetuate seemingly copy/pasted. That’s just not fair. Sorry, a tad bitter and disappointed at the moment.

I was so sure it was going to continue as the pages wound down. There didn't seem enough time to deal with everything. However, it did resolve Kali's tale of saving Bethany and what she is. If there was a sequel, I'd be loving it instead of whining.

Not everything is spelled out completely. There are threads to follow from this story or we can just pick up with Kali's life afterwards. Either way, there's plenty of juice to continue.

After a brief set up, things heat up quick with Kali jumping in to help Bethany. Yet there's no lack of world-building and it feels natural. I’m so glad it wasn’t dragged out just getting to the blurb’s reveal. From there it's constant movement forward.

The group builds and contorts about Kali. They're all prickly with their own secrets and motivations. Not to mention the different social stratospheres they inhibit. It's fun reading them re-bound, bounce, and re-connect. I found them lively and funny in their own way. Skylar is like a manic-pixie girl but in the best way.

Then there's the plot. I saw Kali's mom and Skylar's twist coming but beyond that, nope! In hindsight, I should've seen at least one other thing as well but damn was I wrapped up.

Part of it certainly was the unique world-building. How am I supposed to see shit coming when the typical doesn't exist and the rare is warped like a fun house mirror?

Here's a cute, trippy kitty because I went searching for a creepy, trippy gif at 11PM at night and scared myself like a dumbass. Click this and scroll, if you dare. I made it to 29. You'll see it tick up on the web address as you scroll.

Saying it's not the typical urban paranormal is true but an understatement. Thinking about all the other books I've called different in this genre now makes me wince; Every other day blows them out of the water.

My favorite addition is the sci-fi flare that turns into a wildfire. It builds from this one moment in this alternative timeline and *pop*. It's subtle, if you can call hell dogs, demons, and zombies subtle, and explodes. I love how science is incorporated. I can't imagine a human world that doesn't TBH.

description

It helps that the paranormal isn't new or underground. There's curriculum, laws, jobs, and government agencies built around it. Humans are working at their own pace their own way but it's settled. (As far as they know Mwahahaha DUN DUN DUN)

The only thing left to discuss is the romance. Insta-love meh. I get Kali's feelings and what she's missing. The boy can be creepy and he's just...eh. It's all magical soul mate bullshit. I'm pretty sure the only reason it doesn't piss me off is the how and why of the magical way it works and its connection to the plot. Otherwise, I could do without the whole mess. It's lackluster even in the realm of YA romance. Don't read it for "love" and don't let the one blight ruin the rest for you.
