This was my first Charlaine Harris. It was ok, but there was always something that felt not quite smooth about the writing or the story—I can’t quite identify what. There weren’t errors or things that were cringe, just…something not all the way there for me

The final book of the four book series. It ends the overarching mystery of the series -- what happened to Cameron, Connolly and Tolliver's sister.
I actually give this book 3 1/2 stars rather than four. I knock off half a star because I thought the resolution of the mystery of Cameron's disappearance dove-tailed too nicely and neatly with Connolly and Tolliver's latest case.
I was also very surprised and (a little depressed, actually) at the reveal of what happened to Cameron. I feel like how Connolly and Tolliver probably felt. Which is a great compliment to CH as an author.
I do like the fact that Conolly and Tolliver got closure and peace in the end and their further travels together had a nice optimistic feel to it.
I did like the three previous books in the series better, but this was still a very strong entry to a very good series and a satisfying conclusion.

Let's be real: I really just want to read Kerr's review of this one. Laughably bad as it may be in places—OMG the fixation on irrelevant specifics, like what chairs people sat in, or the stripes on their shirt—it's still a fun way to fall asleep.
On to the third book soon enough...

Second in the Harper Connelly series and even better than the first. Harris gives a lot of twists and turns, not just in the mystery, but in the lives of Harper and Tolliver.
I picked this up from a bargain bin at my local store. I've read the entire true blood series and this is a total different feel. It's a good, spooky mystery. The clues are there, the red herring is there. The only thing that kind of turned me off was the "romance" or love interest of the MC. however, that is brief and does not in any way hinder the mystery of Tabithas killer. Its also notable to mention this is my first Harper Connelly and I did not feel lost since I accidentally started in the middle of the series.
This book was ok. The mystery was decent enough. The characters were fairly likable. Harper's talent for finding the dead is unique. But the series just didn't really grab me the way her Lily Bard and Sookie Stackhouse books did. I think I'm done unless I get a burning curiosity attack one day with a simultaneous need for fluff (it can and does happen.) For that matter, Harris is done too. She only wrote four of these and called it quits.
