*3.5

I have not read the first book as this one was given to me by a friend (it's been sitting in my shelf, collecting dust for years and only when I decided to clean my stuff did I remember its existence lol). 3.5 for now bc I will for sure look up the first one to read it and then reread this

I like the characters better in this series than in the True Blood series.

I picked this up at Barnes and Noble in the Bargain section. I didn't know it was part of a series, but it didn't matter. An easy read, but I am looking forward to the next books in the series.

Reread this and I must say I loved this series and hate that it wasn't made longer

I enjoyed this book. And I really like when I can not figure out who the murderer was. This one stumped me and I'm pretty pleased that Ms Harris seemed to mislead me on purpose.
what I didn't like were some incomplete story thoughts that Harper held about midway through the book. I need more clarification but I didn't get it. Maybe this will present itself in book 3 or 4 and I'll get the closure or understanding I need.
Overall this was a good book. I like that I've gotten a little insight into Harper's skills.

The outright, annoying down-talking that Harper faces is still present in this novel. Gotta love how even in literature sometimes older men talk to younger women like they don’t have brains in their head eh?

This novel, which brings further character development to the stage amps things up a little more and launches the reader into an off-page mystery which had already transpired in the lives of these characters. Nonetheless this mystery was good, though tragic.

I also found something about the way this novel was written to be very comforting.

I did find it a little sad that the two main characters fell into the same trap at the end of this novel as they did the last.

The plot was nice but nothing special. Lovely characters though, I'd expect nothing less from Harris.

This second installment to the Harper Connelly mysteries was a little more dry than I had anticipated, probably because her and Tolliver kept running into dead ends when trying to figure out who the murderer was. I had a feeling it would be Felicia, from the way she acted around Joel and Tolliver; She seemed so aloof and unconcerned, and especially insensitive to her niece's death, which I thought was a little disconcerting. I'm also a little puzzled about Harper's sudden epiphany about the relationship and admiration she has for Tolliver. She kept insisting to everyone she came across that questioned her relationship with her stepbrother, that she didn't see him as anything else but her brother, and then come to find out later that Harper denies the fact? I wonder if she's secretly in love with him... I guess I'll find out more about it in An Ice Cold Grave.

This gets two starts because I am nitpicky about certain things and Charlaine Harris was incapable of keeping the details about Mariella and Gracie straight from one book to another. This is understandable if there are seventeen or so books in between but this was the second book.
