Got it on sale and can see why. Whilst it's a nice easy read I found myself bored and like it was a chore to pick it up and read it. The premise of the books seems really good, love the setting and the dynamics between the characters.
But considering it a crime novel about a theft there's not a lot of focus on the theft and despite some of the characters eventually realising who stole the doll it never really gets solved as to why. And there are no consequences for anyone in the book for any my their sh*tty behaviour.
All in all just left me a bit disappointed and wanting more.

While being an enjoyable read, it also confused me at the end. Some questions go unanswered
For example, it's never clear if the Thief on the Winged Horse actually exists and who wrote the blackmailing letter to Hedwig. It also doesn't get mentioned again afterwards. Another thing that put me off, was when Persephone was in the professor's office and just slightly mentioned in a sentence that she wasn't pregnant. It feels like the author just put that in so the question was "answered", but she didn't really think of an interesting way to solve it. I generally thought that the pregnancy scare was absolutely unnecessary.
Would recommend this book to people that want to read a book about fighting sexism and fighting for your dreams.

~Short Synopsis~

The Kendrick family have been making world-famous dolls since the early 1800s. But they aren't like your regular dolls, these dolls are magic; they have the power to invoke a feeling to whoever touches them. Though founded by sisters, now only men may know the secrets of the workshop. Persephone Kendrick longs to break tradition and become a doll maker. But when the family's most expensive doll is stolen, every thing changes.

~Review~

This book started off really strong and intriguing. I liked Persephone and was invested in her story and also finding out who stole the doll. But as the story progressed, I found myself losing interest.

I found it difficult to pinpoint when this book is set. It seems like it would be set in the past as it centres around (non-plastic) doll making and the business is also incredibly misogynistic. But they also have mobile phones and they do mention barbies at one point. I looked it up to find that it is in fact set in modern day and I found this quite jarring.

There is a relationship that started off really strong but it sort of fizzled out and it was unclear how the characters actually felt about each other. There is also some fairly graphic sex scenes which I was really not expecting when I started this book about doll making.

It wasn't that I didn't enjoy this book but I just didn't give what I expected from it.

Very unusual angle on magic, but well worked out and very enjoyable
