2.5 Stars

Wounded Hearts is by two new-to-me authors. I liked the blurb and the cover so I thought I would try it out. It started out ok; A little cheesy in places, perhaps, but in line for a solid 3 stars.

However, the back and forth wishy-washy feelings got to me. Zane couldn’t make up his mind if he was staying or leaving and they both assumed, presumed, and let their tempers flare at the littlest of things. And then instead of talking, they had sex. Ninety percent of their relationship was based on sex. Not to mention the short, short time frame that their feelings sprung from. By the third time Zane packed his bags, I was done.

Combined with nitpicky things like Zelda supposedly being 5 and in school but they pack a stroller for her? She also sometimes talked like she was three plus they treated her like a toddler at times; Cyrus carried big, beefy, Zane around like he was a little girl; and they kept calling Cyrus old, though from my figuring he couldn’t have been more than 50 (probably more like 40) and they said he was only 10 years older than Zane. It got annoying.

I did like the premise, and as I said, I did enjoy the first part well enough. It just got to be too much in the end. If you like hot tempers, lots of cowboy talk, lots of sex, and a cute kid who visits, you might like this book.

I'm so disappointed right now.

The blurb for this book reads like a checklist of awesome:

- Ex-cop? Check.
- Cowboy? Check.
- Fish out of water? Check.
- Comfort/Healing? Check.
- Age gap? Check.
- MCs that rub each other the wrong way until they discover rubbing each other the right way is far more fun? CHECK. DOUBLE CHECK.
- EYE PATCH?! That's a great big fat 'check' too!

See what I'm talking about?! SO. MUCH. WIN!

So I went ahead and pre-ordered this book, even though I hadn't read anything by either of these authors before. *disappointed sigh* I should have known better.

The writing was bad, friends. I mean, baaaaaaaaad. The dialogue was bad, the inner dialogue was worse, and the exposition was dropped into the story with so little finesse, it caused me to physically cringe away from my Kindle. For instance, in a single breath, I was informed that Cy used to be married to a gangster who taught him how to lie, cheat and steal (and yet was still the love of his life and no other man will ever measure up). Said gangster was murdered in front of him and Cy was wrongly convicted of the crime, spending 5 years behind bars before Ren got him out.

See? I couldn't even explain all that in a single sentence!

I feel like that is the sort of information you dole out over the course of a book; you don't just plop it awkwardly onto the page and walk away. I understand wanting to make unique, complex, memorable characters, but Ty and Zane Cy and Zane went from characters to caricatures at the speed of light and I couldn't foresee them recovering from that.

Of course, this is just one of MANY examples of clunky writing, so I cut my losses and DNF'd at 15%. I'll probably be avoiding both of these authors in the future. :(

DNF’d at 25%. I may come back to it but I’m having trouble getting into it. The character development seems really shallow so far.

The blurb was better than the book itself and I feel that's a constant problem with Remmy Duchene's books. I got it because it ticked all my boxes as far as what I liked to read. But the content was really insufferable. The dialogue was the worst part of it. I was going to suffer through and try and finish it, but there was just too much bad and hardly any good.

4 Hearts

This story opens on a whole lot of feels, and I’m grateful for it. Jackson grabbed my attention from the first page and held onto it throughout the story. His emotions were raw and real, and not whiney. Remmy Duchene hit the mark in portraying Jackson’s broken heart.

Jackson has come out and is still adored by his fans. Country music is his life’s work and he loves it with his whole heart. But his record label doesn’t feel like he is good for business, and ends their contract, stating “creative differences”, while still making money from his entire catalogue of work.

Enter Marquis. The executive of a small record label in New York City, that does not have a country singer on their lineup. But no matter, Marquis is fascinated by the enigmatic singer, and is outraged when he sees the final press conference where Jackson indicates he will be retiring. This is a travesty against the music industry, and music in general, and he is determined to get this man on his label with his full back catalogue of songs.

And then he meets Jackson, and his dick is so happy it wants out immediately, even though (especially because?) Jackson is a growly beast who doesn’t want Marquis in his space
