It gets a bit dry in the middle, but push through because it is so worth it at the end. It will destroy you.
The beginning was insanely slow or it would have gotten 4 stars.

Anyone else obsessed with taking pictures of nature now that fall is here? It felt like the perfect time to read Damnation Spring. Thank you to Scribner for my ARC - this one was published back in August!
Genre: literary fiction, family drama, small town drama
In one sentence: Midwife Colleen and her husband Rich, a tree-topper, are trying to make a better life in their small Northwest logging community, but they can't escape the consequences that logging has brought.
This has been a great year for environmental fiction for me! I was a little hesitant about this book because of its length, but I ended up enjoying it a lot. The book is divided into four sections, one representing each of the seasons, and these sections helped me divide up and process my reading so that I didn't feel burnt out. This is a book I'd recommend taking some time with, and I'm glad I was able to do that.
Colleen's story pulled me in from the beginning - there's not much more powerful than a woman fighting for her family against steep odds. Her relationship with son Chub warmed my heart, and I admired her efforts to help her community.
I appreciated the way Davidson portrayed the mixed blessings of logging and how the industry both supported and damaged the community. Without the jobs provided, the town wouldn't exist. But these jobs came at the cost of human health - too high a cost for anyone to pay. And how do you prove that an industry is damaging the environment?
If you're interested in a character-driven, slow burn drama to curl up with this winter, I'd give this one a try!
