I wasn’t in love with this one. The writing was okay but flat. I liked the plot and didn’t immediately guess the culprit but did have a good idea.

Terrible writing. Slow burn. Finally some action in the last chapter.
Read for book club. For about 50% of the book, the story moves at an agonizing pace. It picks up after the halfway point but is quite predictable overall. It also has some dark themes that are under-explored and seem to only have been added for the shock value.

Hazel's PI business never took off the way she imagined; she's 30, constantly dancing on the knife's edge of being broke, living with a roommate (Kenny, her childhood friend who harbors a not-so-secret crush on her). Her days are filled with hunting down insurance scammers, cheating spouses. But when Madeline Hemsley enters her office with an offer Hazel absolutely can't refuse, it seems her luck has changed. Potential for a huge payout, with thousands up front? All Hazel has to do is find Madeline's goddaughter, Mia, before Madeline's deadline strikes. But there's more to the case than meets the eye, and Hazel wouldn't be the first to fail at this task. The clock is ticking, not just for Hazel, but on Mia too...
There were some seriously dramatic moments sprinkled in that seemed to go nowhere/didn't add to the story, which I found frustrating. At times, Hazel seems much younger than 30 (while playing at being older). The ending came on VERY quickly and, while not out of nowhere, I would've appreciated more buildup. Also did not appreciate the constant references to the main character's body, how she had put on 15 pounds in the last 10 years (sOoOo much!!), and how every tight dress somehow smoothed out the extra pounds and pulled her boobs into place. Yikes
