The build up was a little slow but once she really gets into the investigations things start flowing. There were obvious predictions I had on who looked good for the missing girls but it could have also gone anywhere which I liked in the beginning. Was able to narrow it down and then it all started connecting. The ending came really quick and was a predictable but some of the people involved did surprise me! Definitely would say this is more of a younger adult mystery book. As someone from Upstate NY and only 4 hrs from Lake George it was nice having that connection! I think it was a good book but could have done some things different to make to great!

The Orphanage by the Lake by Daniel G. Miller is described as a captivating psychological crime thriller; however, felt that it was more of a traditional detective mystery.
Mahm and I are typically suckers for books of this genre, but we were a little disappointed in this one. We did not really relate to the FMC, Hazel, who was a private investigator. At times, we felt she was a little amateurish and quite obstinate. The mystery/case was intriguing, but was too distracted by Hazel’s immaturity.
I felt that this would’ve been better if marketed as a young adult mystery as the writing style was pretty basic.

The Orphange by the Lake was a really good mystery. In it, a private investigator sets out to find a missing girl. I liked the characters of Hazel and Kenny best, but the villians weren't cookie cutters either. The pacing was good, but could have moved a little faster before the climax. There was suspense throught the book. The ending hit hard and fast. I'm happy that there will hopefully be a second book. 4.5 stars rounded to 5 here on NetGalley.

3 stars i guess the that it was a sex trafficking ring with andrews family passing it down and funding it but i wasnt expecting a secret lounge full of child prostitutes run by sonia?? that bitch. but overall i enjoyed but the writting lowkey is cringy at times and the amount of times its metioned hazel is a small asian woman and shes asian and did i mention shes small?? its a decent commentary on the world of women and girls if you ignore the fact this is written by a white man but theres no subtlety everything is kinda out there in your face which i could have done toned down. anyways sorry for judging you bobby and mackenzie. but the way kenny saved her in the the end i was like eh it was giving "nice guys finish last" i would have preferred if she found a way out and wasnt saved by him but seems like they were setting that up from early on but glad they didnt date. and i actually enjoyed hazel because she was mean when she needed to be but what she really needed was to register a gun?? trashy thriller that probably isnt the best book objectively but i enjoyed the reading experience. REVIEWS REMINDING ME HAZEL WAS DUMB ASL FOR SPENDING SO MUCH TIME WITH ANDREW WHEN SHE HAD A DEADLINE TO MAKE THAT IS PRACTICALLY LIFE OR DEATH? if this book was written by a woman this could easily be five stars but its odd how women are described as this is written by a man.
I was so excited for this one because I thought the summary was really giving spooky vibes because I'm begging for fall but honestly it falls a bit flat in terms of being a thriller. I didn't love the writing and just wanted more, I don't think it's bad but it just feels like a lot of this just wouldn't slide and it felt very predictable.

There has been so much hype around this book and I had such high hopes. Unfortunately, it fell a little flat for me. I thought the overall premise of the story was good but it was a super slow start and it felt like all the action took place in the last 20-25% of the story.
