book club read.
Not really the type of book I would have picked up for myself, but I did enjoy it. It was interesting to immerse yourself into the life of a private investigator. It was a quick, easy, ready. I didn't see the ending coming and honestly hoped that it WOULDN'T be what it was. It adequately gave me the ick, but that's a me problem.
Also, it annoyed me the fmc was a PI and had no self defense training, no gun, nothing but a taser. Like ma’am these are the scum of the earth and you’ve been assaulted more than once ARM YOURSELF .
If SVU is your jam, you will enjoy this book.
Definitely needs trigger warnings.

The Orphanage by the Lake
By Daniel G. Miller
4.25 ⭐️
I enjoyed reading The Orphanage by the Lake written by Daniel G. Miller. The story was suspenseful and easy to follow. There were some twists and turns along the way. I definitely wanted to keep reading the entire way through the book.
I loved the Female Main Character, Hazel Cho. She was funny, smart, and a little bit quirky. She was the perfect character for her role in the story.
We get to follow Cho, who is a Korean Private Investigator, through her case of a missing girl from Upstate New York. We also meet some other characters along the way that each has their own solid personality and purpose in the story.
I especially loved the setting focus on minorities in this book. Mostly minority women/girls, but there are a couple of men that are also minorities.
If you like crime thrillers, especially ones where it feels like you are helping solve the case as you read, then this book will likely be a good fit for you. I do caution you to look at the trigger warning first to be sure this book is a good fit before you purchase it.

Quick read fast paced twist and turns to solve the crime by dinner time! Maybe I missed the trigger warnings? for some of the content: mentions of rape, scenario of attempted rape, and criminal sex trafficking
While many readers rate "The Orphanage by The Lake" as a 4 or 5-star book, I found it to be a 3-star read. I struggled to engage with the plot, which felt disjointed at times, causing me to lose interest in the characters. However, about 20-25% from the end, I found a bit more intrigue. Although it wasn't a favorite of mine, I encourage others to read it; you might uncover a gem that I missed.

I liked the PI Hazel who’s the main character and her style of investigating but also being realistic in modern day where it’s scary to be a woman poking around. I had a suspicion on the intentions of one of the men in the book…and I was right! So that was a nice pat on the back.
