I’d give it a 3.5 if I could. Gorgeous writing but the story was oh so bleak.

While I consider Celeste Ng a gorgeous writer, this was such a difficult book. It was excruciating to see everyone misunderstand each other and for parents to inflict their own agendas on their children and not see their tender hearts. "What makes something precious? Losing it and finding it." While there is a catharsis to this ride over shards of broken glass, I would rather have not experienced it.

Meh. Daughter dies. Family grieves. Family does what families do when grief strikes - they hurt each other. In addition, the third-person omniscient drove me a little batty because it jumped around a lot. The narrative goes back and forth from the time Lydia disappears (the opening line is "Lydia is dead.") and the time leading up to her disappearance. Father whines. Mother caves. Brother yells. The little sister was finally emerging as an interesting character about the time the book ended.
