Lucy Checks In follows Lucia Gianatti, a 49 year old woman who has had her life turned entirely on it's head.

Lucy has gone from running (and living in) a fancy schmancy hotel in NYC to broke, unemployed and living in her old bedroom at her parents house. The speculation around why she lost her job means it's damn near impossible for her to find another, until an opportunity in France appears!

Lucy may have bitten of more than she can chew though... Imagining herself riding in a town car through the picturesque countryside of France on her way to her new job running (and living in) a luxurious hotel for the well-to-do, our dear Lucy is rudely awakened when she arrives in the city of Rennes and finally lays eyes on the old, dilapidated Hotel Paradis.

I really enjoyed the characters, they're mature and real and flawed and that's what makes them great. By far, my favorite part of this book is the mental picture it paints of the French countryside. This was a fun, light read that I would gladly recommend for a friend. The end feels a little rushed, as though there were a few too many things that needed wrapped up all at once.

This was such a great heart felt book! I haven’t read very many books with mature women as the MC.

Lucia, 49 unemployed and “homeless” needs a new start. She decides to take the challenge to take over a run down hotel in France! What she think will be a gorgeous hotel is a crumbling place.

This book made me feel so encouraged and warm and fuzzy inside. I love that it showed that you can accomplish anything at any age. It make you feel like you have so much more time to be successful in the life.

I think this mostly was a 3.5 star book - it was fun and enjoyable but the book at times was a little slow. I thought this would have a bit focus on the romance but I did enjoy the story and the character development.

ARC thoughtfully provided by NetGalley and St. Martins Press for honest review.

A very straightforward book - no real plot twists or turns of events. I kept waiting for it to become like Hotel Nantucket, but never really got to that level. I enjoyed this book similar to how I would enjoy an HGTV show, very even and mindless.

3.5. Would be a 4 or higher if there was no romance sub plot in it tbh because those parts didn’t resonate with me. If you’re looking for a romance read, this may not be for you. But I was just here for the American in Paris vibes and it did not disappoint. It’s giving Emily in Paris but late forties and I’m not mad. Just could care less about bing, but that wasn’t what I was looking for out of this book anyways.

I really enjoyed this book. The descriptions of the hotel, Rennes and Paris all provided me with an escape to France. The fact that Lucy is a middle-aged woman trying to renovate a hotel and rebuild her life in a country other than her own is admirable.

I can’t help but cheer Lucy on right from the beginning. After her boyfriend/owner of the prestigious New York hotel that Lucy has managed leaves the country with millions of dollars, her business reputation and love life disappear with it. No hotel is willing to hire her. That is until she is hired to rebuild a heritage hotel in Rennes, France.

The hotel hasn’t been used as such since the war. Although Lucy can see the beauty of the hotel the way it once was, she knows she’s in way over her head. While she thought that the six-month contract she’d signed meant she was supervising the rebuild, she soon learns that the task of recreating the hotel is up to her and a few others who are tenants of the hotel.

As the work on the hotel progresses, Lucy begins to experience and feel the charm of living in a small French village. There are interesting and diverse characters which added to the pleasure of reading this book including Bing the resident artist she’s attracted to. By the time the hotel’s work is complete and she’s managing a small staff she can see herself staying here. That is, until tragedy strikes and her life changes overnight.

I recommend Lucy Checks In to those readers that enjoy Women’s Fiction or Romance books with strong female characters.

A nice fluff book if you want light reading in between lengthy books to cleanse your palate. A lady is in her mid life crisis after a big scandal has hit her. She’s 49 and is having to live with her mom and dad again until she gets this offer to fix up an almost-nearly dilapidated hotel. She’s met with nothing she expected upon her arrival and is now stuck renovating this fixer-upper for six months. Can I just say when we first meet Mr. Bing he’s a fucking duchebag. Time passes they pull off everything and our main character and bing fall for each other. A good book overall for a quick detox from anything too with complicated a plot line.

I usually gravitate towards younger narrators (maybe it’s my way of trying to stay young.. not that I’m old. But I think it helps me relate to the character, in which makes me enjoy the book more). While I did not realize how old Lucy was, I just couldn’t find myself wanting to continue reading because I was interested. I only continued because it was not bad enough not to finish. The beginning has so much potential: she had to let the FBI know that she left the country? That’s such an amazing setup for an exciting plot. Yet I felt the storyline was a letdown. Nothing exciting happened. Maybe that was the point of the story: life can be mundane but you can learn to appreciate each of the moments. While that is a sentimental lesson, it does not make for a good read.
