Laugh out loud funny, well written, with great characters and a sufficiently entertaining premise. Sure it's not super believable but who cares? This was a lot of fun and I could not stop reading it. Five stars all around!

really cute book. had a Victor Victoria vibe to it. I may need to buy a paper copy bc I got it for free on Kindle

This book was a light and fun read, and I enjoyed it a lot for a while, but I started to grow tired of it after about two thirds.
SpoilerAfter the big discovery had been made, I was very disappointed in the duke, as he turned out to be a male chauvinist pig, and I seriously wished for someone else to appear and for Millicent to leave the duke for the new guy. The fact that he didn't automatically fall for Millicent was actually quite fresh and I could have appreciated it if it weren't for his "okay, so if you're a woman then I have the right to tell you what to do" attitude.

But even when the story was a little upsetting, the dialogues were really entertaining; and I don't regret having picked up this book at all.

3.5 stars

Fun, witty, sweet, and charming, this book was enjoyable to read.

Some of the plot twists and hijinx were a bit outrageous, but what do you expect when a book is called [b:Ridiculous|14398781|Ridiculous|D.L. Carter|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1448305898s/14398781.jpg|20040757]!

I really wondered how Millicent/Anthony/Helene was going to get her/himself out of this mess. With her crimes compounding
Spoiler(sodomy apparently being worse than abuse of a corpse and identity theft in Regency London)
and her huge fan club in London, how it ended was the only solution. I really enjoyed the slow burn friendship to lovers. Shoffer accepted his friend's gender change and deception a bit too easily, but I could sort of understand because they were really close. I think he inherently trusted she'd have a really good reason for doing so. It would have been nice to see Beth's reaction to the reveal as well since she was obsessed with "Anthony" for most of the book.

The Perceval angle worked itself out a little too nicely. I thought he was in London the whole time and would find out about his "brother" eventually, but perhaps he was too stingy to even buy a newspaper.

Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would!

Halfway through I was loving this book. I was amused by the premise and I enjoyed the story and the writing. For the first 3/4 it felt like a cross between "As You Like It" and "The Importance of Being Earnest" set in a Jane Austen novel.

The feel changed near the end and

SPOILER: it got a little graphic sexually.

I still liked the story and still recommend it, but I probably could have done with a little more blowing curtains and ... Instead of explicit description. I guess I felt the improbability of the start was such fun and the ending was too conventional-romance novel for me.

Re-read on 1/1/21. Still ridiculous but I think I noticed some flaws this time around.

ROFLMFAO @ this book!!! It truly lives up to its name!

I adored this - silly Regency romance with a Heyer-esque screwball premise. Except then it's also an examination of Regency gender roles and expressions, societal hierarchies and aversion thereof, the power of rumor, and the benign self-absorption of the freakishly rich - as well as a mental and logistical puzzle from about midway onward. There's a great deal about the transfer of assets and power upon death in titled versus entailed families and a LOT about social mobility.

Add to that some lovely characters, hilarious dialogue, a modern sensibility applies to Regency society, and a bunch of happy endings - ah, glory. Also, second-string heroines with guns.

Detractors: the second sex scene is truly awful, the love interest's internal monologues about possession of lovers is EUCGHCK, and not enough clothing descriptions. In my humble opinion.
