Very tentatively giving this one 5 stars. It grabbed me and wouldn't let go. It was certainly intense.
Gabriel Allon isn't dead, though the world thinks he is. He lost a close friend in Hannah Weinberg, a Parisian Jew killed in a horrible terrorist attack. His mission is to train the Black Widow, an Israeli doctor named Natalie Mizrahi. Natalie will become Leila Hadawi, a Palestinian doctor who will go to Paris and work her way into ISIS' good graces - ideally, far enough inside to bring them down.
There's a lot of tension in the book. It's well written. Daniel Silva really makes you feel like you're there, at home in Paris or an ISIS camp or Jerusalem. I didn't find the American politics to be overwhelming or distract from the story, but I also don't mind a story where the Israelis are the good guys.

Interessante para quem gosta da problemпїЅпїЅtica MпїЅпїЅdio Oriente e do jogo geopolпїЅпїЅtico da zona. Um livro para quem tem paciпїЅпїЅncia. Demora um pouco a avanпїЅпїЅar nalguns momentos e o desenlace пїЅпїЅ talvez rпїЅпїЅpido e fпїЅпїЅcil demais para os 'herпїЅпїЅis'. Quase que dava 3,5 estrelas, porque fiquei a pensar no livro, m
I read this book unfamiliar with any of the previous works in the Gabriel Allon series. This meant I was not as invested in this character nor some of his backstory which is weaved into the book. However, I enjoyed this book and the character Natalie is an enjoyable protagonist. My only criticism is that it seemed to have much for falling action dedicated to Gabriel and some of his life events outside of this book rather than Natalie who was much more instrumental in this story.

While normally a big fan of this series, this was definitely one of the weaker entries. Primarily because the plot seems mostly a rehashed version of Portrait of a Spy. Right down to the relationship between the deep cover agent and Mikhail (a relationship that the author doesn’t waste much time on making seem plausible). Topped off with the over the top criticism of the (name never used) Obama administration. There’s plenty of criticism I’d be fine with, but once you’ve reached the “only really cares about an attack on the homeland because of his ‘legacy’” stage, you’ve kinda jumped the shark. That said it’s not terrible, just not super original... if you haven’t read the entire series you’ll probably like it more than if you have.
Slow paced until the last 5th of the book, at which point all Hell breaks loose. If you want a spy novel, steeped in spy craft, this is the one. If you want more of Gabriel Allon as an art restorer, this isn't it. Silva still delivers, though!
