Detective investigates an organized crime ring run by caricatures of Latinos, specifically Mexican-Americans.

<spoilers>In one part the MC finds some of the fake insurance claims:

These vicious looking batos locos had been licking their pencil points, trying to fill out insurance forms for a series of bogus injuries they couldn’t even spell right. …One had written: “Were drivin north wen this car hit us from behine and nockt us into a telephone phole. I bump my hed on the windshield, suffrin bruces. Ever sins the acident, I hadve wiplash and panes in my nek. Also, bad hedakes, dobull vishun, and shoot-in panes in my bake.”

</spoilers>

Funniest part was a dog named Perro being antagonistic to the white MC bc he “doesn’t like gringos.”

Pacing was fine. Still don’t recommend.

With H is for Homicide, the mystery doesn’t really come from a whodunit or a howdunit perspective – we know by page 100 who the ringleader of the insurance fraud is and how Bibianna is involved. There is a minor mystery that Kinsey doesn’t solve until the end regarding a leak in the police department going to the fraudsters, but the main mystery is: how is Kinsey going to get out of this?

I'm just going to say it, this novel contains on of the best examples of murder as a Mcguffan in the whole history of literature. Even the title is a Mcguffan because the murder really does not matter to the story at all. It was still a pretty good story, but far from my favorite in the series.

This book seemed to me to be an odd departure from the rest of this series so far. Instead of her usual private investigation, Kinsey goes undercover. She befriends Bibianna Diaz an insurance fraudster. She got Bibianna's name after the death of one of her friends and colleagues, who had flagged her in the system. She takes on the identity of Hannah Moore and ends up in jail for the night with Bibianna after a dinner goes horribly wrong and someone is killed. When they are released they are picked up by Bibianna's dangerous ex-boyfriend Raymond Maldonado. For all intents and purposes, the two women have been kidnapped by Raymond and forced into his insurance fraud scheme. Kinsey is usually a pretty tough character but in this book she seemed quite passive and not in a real hurry to get away from Raymond. The story line was OK but the dialogue was pretty bad.

Good addition to the Alphabet series. Great book for a rainy day.

I liked the story but there wasn't much of a mystery to it as with previous books and the ending felt really rushed.
