Adele is typically single, kinda feisty, and I love her sassy attitude. The prologue starts with a short recap of her last love life issues and, of course, an introduction to Finn. Finn is a hot lumberjack, a single father, and from the wrong family with a feud in the small town of Lovewell, Maine. Oh, that kiss was scorching, and the chemistry between Finn and Adele is like hot sauce.
Then we jump to the present day, and things are hot, temperamental, and downright bothersome as they both work through their issues in the same shop. Finn has sides of him that come alive for Adele, and she also has some problems to work through. I love the axe-throwing competition and the small-town life. The story moves along with these enemies sharing space and chemistry. The chemistry finally ignites, and it is rustic and steaming hot.
Adele is a super strong, feminine, stubborn woman who cares too much about the town gossip and other people’s opinions. Finn is dealing with his own issues and is a little more sensitive than I expected this bad-boy veteran to be. Oh, add in accidental pregnancy to this developing secret relationship, and I’m afraid this small-town romance won’t be so secret anymore.
This book gets action-packed as some of the suspense gets laid to rest, but then we get the heartwarming happy-for-now ending, and their lives will make you smile.
Overall, this was a sweet read with a doting book boyfriend, a strong female MC, and the enemies-to-lovers storyline. I enjoyed Adele and Finn’s story.

Viking lumberjack pilot.. did you know these were a thing? I did not and now I'm fully immersed in my lumberjack MMC era, end date TBD.
I'm sure I came across this from somewhere on bookstagram and I've now added Daphne's entire back-catalogue of this specific series to my TBR. Set in rural, wild and majestic Maine, I feel like there's enough heat and the right amount of thriller/suspense to capture even the most skeptical lumberjack enthusiast. Not to mention the dedication of this is my top-runner for Number 1 Dedication of 2023.
First of all, WE STAN A TALL FMC. I'm not against any physical type of character, literally ever, but I found myself really enjoying that not only is Adele over average height, she can also out-muscle almost all of her brothers and she's got a chip on her shoulder about toxic masculinity in a male-dominated field (engineering).. hello, girl-crush.
Which means that Finn Hebert - 2nd oldest son of her family's sworn enemy family - is an absolute wildcard MMC in that he cannot stop the way her fire infatuates him. He may be separated from the mother of his daughter, but he loves them both loyally and without fail. His heart is big enough for his two first girls and the growing feelings for Adele that he's tried ignoring for years.
There's a moose with an attitude, a mystery to solve, and a secret romance that shows how sometimes, we may be prickly on the outside but that's only to protect our soft parts.. and sometimes we're happy-go-lucky on the outside, but that's only to cover up how bone deep our guilt and regret are from things beyond our control.
If you like:
- grumpy x sunshine trope, but she's more like a raging fire that blazes hotter at the slightest provocation and he loves to pour gasoline on her to feel her burn
- enemies to lovers .. but she's the only one who considers them enemies
- a single dad who has a GREAT relationship with the mother of his child and supports her and her new partner (so swoony to see healthy co-parenting relationship!)..
.. grab this story. You can read it as a standalone and I'm not mad I did - but I want to know about the other couples in Lovewell and uncover the mystery that resolves at the end of this one.

What if Thor was a lumberjack? And an ex-airforce pilot? And probably saved kittens in his spare time. Finn Herbert’s family imploded around him and now his name is mud. He ends up taking a job at the rival family’s firm to keep his dreams alive and starts seeing more of Adele Gagnon. Who is very much the grumpy to his sunshine but can throw axes with alarming accuracy so nobody’s given her that feedback.
“To all the angry women. We ride at dawn. The patriarchy isn’t going to smash itself.”
I have been dying for Adele Gagnon’s book since the first Lovewell book. I love a badass heroine and Adele was the definition of that. Mix in an enemies to lovers trope with Finn Hebert of a rival family and this book was everything.
Adele and Finn were perfect for each other. They had so much in common, a love of national parks and Theodore Roosevelt! (Very much same also loved that Daphne said that is true for her real life relationship with her husband, love when authors write about their lives) Finn was amazing single dad who knew that Adele was it for him and he was determined to that to prove to her. I also loved Finn’s daughter, Merry, she was so invested in her father’s happiness.
“I can protect myself.”
“I know that, Dad. But wouldn’t you want someone to help you fight off the aliens?”
This book wrapped up the series long mystery of who within Gangon lumber was behind the murder of Adele’s father and the accident her brother had. It was a perfect ending to the series and I truly hope we get to know Finn’s brothers, maybe a future series?!
Thank you @daphneelliotauthor for the ARC!
