To start, the dedication is already powerful.

To everyone who thought they had to be someone better, stronger, faster, more. To everyone who helped them understand they were enough, just as they were.

This is a must-read for everybody especially children who have grown up or growing up with high expectations from someone they love. This is for someone who is terrified of disappointing someone who matters to them and this is for someone who thinks theyre losing themselves and wants to be found.

Set in a sort of magical town, Rose Alice Anders is a 12 y/o girl who everyone believes will be the most magical person then turns out she's not. Rose' journey in finding herself includes the quiet kind of domestic abuse we often couldn't see superficially but left us a sort of trauma in our personality and self esteem when people expects us to be better that what we already are and how people could love her differently. Her biggest journey i think is when her world changed not because she changed but when her perception of the world or magic changed.

I never expected it to be this un-magical, this realistic for a story I thought was easy to read. From someone who will always be angry because of her childhood, I hope no one will ever feel unsafe in their own homes again.

I think this book is so important for kiddos who are enduring trauma. I wish I would have had this book as a child.

This book is a 4.5 but there are no half stars on Goodreads.

Oh man, this book deals with the dark subject of abuse in an obtuse sort of way. As an adult reading the book I knew that her dad was abusive but I think it will take some kids longer to figure that out. I like that the author works the subject into the story with little instances, so that it isn't immediately obvious or scary. Eventually you know that he is abusive and that Rose is capable enough to deal with it.

I really enjoyed Rose's attitude towards magic and how useful it actually is. I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a great story.
