Wow Lew Wallace needed an editor. The movie is much better than the book.

Brilliant descriptions of the desert, tall ships, galley slaves and sea battles, chariot races.
Sensitive and vivid description of the Bible story and crusifiction

I'm glad I made the effort to read this. Excellent epic. It did not disappoint.

In Ben-Hur, Lew Wallace weaves the story of Christ with the tale of Judah Ben-Hur a Jewish prince. This classic story brings the biblical accounts of the three wise men, the birth of Christ, his rise to the forefront of the clash between Rome and Israel, and his passion and death to life.

As we follow Ben-Hur from his boyhood in his father’s home, to the unjust sentence of enslavement in the hull of a Roman warship, to his chariot race against his adversary, Messala, to his continued struggle to find his mother and sister, Tizrah, to his encounters with the Nazarite and his conversion, we see the changes that strengthen his character and ultimately instill in him a call to good works, forgiveness, and faith.

Despite the age of the book, and therefor some old fashioned language and descriptions (there are some descriptions in there that we wouldn't use in this age anymore), it is still a gripping story. It's lovely how the story of Ben Hur is intertwined with the biblical story of Jesus.

Lew Wallace created a whale of a story in Ben-Hur and the sales and wildly popular film adaptation attest to the power of his writing. The book itself is brilliant at times and boring at others. While it feels too long it is certainly worth a read and a book that deserves a resurgence of popularity.

While clearly a product of it's time and guilty of some problematic commentary, Ben-Hur is an incredible book to experience. The discourse on faith, love, service, forgiveness & selflessness is beautifully woven into a simple but exquisite plot that is electrifying to read and inspirational to finish. The book is obviously superior to all it's film adaptations, but I can't argue that Charlton Heston's performance clearly brought the visceral yet noble spirit and glory of the character to life.
