I understand that this novel is not an adventure story like I originally thought it would be (along the likes of Robinson Crusoe etc) but in fact a satir of the human condition as experienced in the 1700's. It is not an overly exciting book and what really really made it a hard read for me was the fact that Gulliver is a toss pot. He is a self indulgent, brown nosing little twit with a superior complex. I could not stand him. And I'm not sure if that was the intention? If it was then job well done Mr Swift! If not.. Well there is a seat right next to Umbridge.
I get the point of the book, I really do, but I don't read fiction to self examine my corrupt ways. I wanted an adventure story but ended up being told I was a disgusting Yahoo by a man who wants to be a horse.

It started well with astute irony, sarcasm and delicate humor.
As it went on though it degraded into open criticism and utter misanthropy.
Another downside is that it's neither for children (as it's often marketed) nor adults (originally written for but I believe quite dumb as such).

When I was at school I used to read it whenever I was feeling particularly misanthropic. The fourth book was my favourite because i liked horses.

Overall a really interesting satire that remains relevant today. The shifts in Gulliver’s perspective between each book offer amazing insight into how worldview is entirely shaped by subjective position. The comments made on European colonialism, war and politics are poignant. The most interesting book is the fourth, exploring the nature of humanity and critiquing our complete lack of reason, only to go too far the other way. Loved studying it.
