“Emifal firdaant. May death claim me first.”

It’s crazy to think that this series, that I started when I was 16, is over for me after 8 years.

“You are broken. But it is broken things that are the sharpest. The deadliest. It is broken things that are the most unexpected, and the most underestimated.”

It’s hard to write a review for the last book in a series without saying too much.

But I will say that Sabaa Tahir’s writing is truly in its own league. I love the way she creates and fleshes out her characters and the worldbuilding is phenomenal.

“Can I kick him?" my brother asks. "I'm going to kick him."
"He saved your life Darin."
"A small kick," he argues. "It wouldn't even hurt him. Look at him, skies. It would probably break MY foot."
"NO."
"Fine." Once past Elias, my brother turns around and mimes a kick, grinning.

I cried a lot and I smiled a bit. This was truly a very honest outlook on war and its consequences. I will need at least 10 business days to recover.

That was a masterpiece. I frankly wasn’t expecting a 5-star finale; I enjoyed the series, but the last two books were a bit up-and-down for me. Something kept me reading, though, and I couldn’t be happier with the way the series ended (which is saying a lot when my heart was ripped out more times than I can count). What a nuanced, moving exploration of war and grief and what it means to be human and imperfect and alone and to fight for the people you love.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Sabaa Tahir is a masterful storyteller. This book was a love letter not only to the characters she spent four books developing, but also to the written word. I spent most of the second half in tears. I cried in mourning, I cried in fury, I even cried over several intimate scenes because they were so damn tender. Now I want to cry all over again because of the fact that I will never again read this book for the first time.

I’m UPSET. Its all over, i cant believe its all over. I literally could not make myself put this book down. I was reading until 2am. I feel strange.

The ending was honestly perfect. The perfect combination of bitter and sweet. It really is one of my favorite endings so far.

I will do anything for Helene. Any single thing. I love her sooooooo much. And her story arc was done soooo well. Her chapters were the best in the book. Shes my absolute favorite.

My favorite part of laias chapters was her slow coaxing of elias. It was both sweet and determined, a perfect example of who laia is.

Elias oh elias. How far he has come. My only criticism is there wasnt enough of the old elias charm.

To those who have yet to read the book, i warn you: it is not your typical ya happily ever after. But you will be satisfied with the ending. Everything is done with a purpose.

I do question some elements of the world building, but that may be solved when i reread (i will be rereading this many many times).

I will miss these characters so much. I know that this will be the series i turn to when i need comfort. :( :( im going to really really really miss this.

I was really unhappy with the beginning of the book, but I was so glad it kept up with the others. 5 star series!
