This was meh for me. The stream of consciousness writing was a nice change of pace from what I've been reading but I just couldn't get into this.

I didn't quite know what to expect from a book I found at the thrift store and had never heard of, but it had a pretty cover!
At first I was out off by the abundance of run-on sentences but then I found that it helped me to read faster and also served the purpose of making a harder hit on my heart.
I think it was beautifully written and the author has an enviable way with words.
It definitely ended differently than I thought it would but overall, a good love story and I would recommend it just for the experience of the author's prose, if not the actual story itself.

There’s incest. There’s a 14 and 15 year old pair of cousins who consistently and continuously have sex.

This is another book that I found compelling enough that I just HAD to keep reading it, but in the end I just didn't like it. It was dark and sad, which is not something I every like. There was a bit oddness to the narration where there was no punctuation regarding things people said and I found that a little off-putting. And finally, there was a weird jump in the story I just couldn't appreciate. I felt it was done poorly and made me more frustrated than anything. I couldn't put it down, but I wish I had never picked it up, honestly. I only gave it 3 stars because it was very compelling and if you don't mind the "Downer" book then you might enjoy it.

Den får en att tänka väldigt mycket och den är väldigt värd att läsa.

This is a story about love during a terrible time. War has invaded England, even the countryside where Daisy has come from NY to stay w/ her dead mother's sister's family. Daisy and her cousin Edward fall in love, but before long, the army takes over the farm and the girls are sent to live elsewhere. Witnessing horrible acts takes their toll, but Daisy and her cousin Piper eventually make it back to the farm, which is now deserted--they have no idea what happened to the rest of the family, if they are even alive. Daisy's father manages to get her out of the country (against her will) and it is 6 years before she is able to go back to the people she loves. What she finds may be too tough to take.

A teen girl's first hand perspective of living in occupied England during a future war - dark and twisty, and very compelling. Daisy is seen as rather in the way at home with her dad and his new wife, who is expecting HER baby, so Daisy is shipped off to England to live with cousins she has never met before. Four cousins, three teen boys and a 9 year old girl - living in a dilapidated old country estate with a smattering of sheep, chickens, dogs and seemingly very few adults after Aunt Penn leaves for a business trip. No explanation of an Uncle. Not Daisy's main concern, I guess.

Daisy has a unique and powerful voice. Written in dialect, it's a little jarring, especially if you are a stickler for quotation marks, but Daisy comes through. She is mad at her dad. Justifiably. She and her cousins fall into a rhythm, mostly oblivious to the world around them and the encroaching war. An ill-defined war, which may be due to Daisy's lack of information sources, or else just it not being that important to her. What is important to Daisy is being part of a family for the first time in her life.

Daisy has a rather serious eating disorder. But she never says that. She talks ar0und it, from all sides, and then you see it. That is part of the brilliance of this book and its format.

Daisy has an intense relationship with her cousin Edmond. Some reviewers of this book were rather put off by that. Hey, weirder things have happened in the real world. This seemed completely realistic given their circumstances. Coming of age in a foreign country during a war surrounded by relatives that you've only just met, well why not I guess. This did not put me off.

I loved the title, and read it over and over as a mantra every time Daisy changed her living situation. Now you will too. It's like an earworm. I wanted to know everything that happened. Like Daisy, we will not always get what we want. But, you find some times, you get what you need - apologies to Mick Jagger. This book was not for everyone, but it was for me.
