First and foremost, I learned from her experience— new depth to growing up African-American and poor. But because it was presented in a new way, I think I had more appreciation . So, I’m not one to read verse often. But this book is put together so well that the verse builds as if it were straight text.
And then as a bonus— her use of language demonstrates the power of verse. I would think teachers of poetry would grab this for their classes.
Couldn’t put it down but wanted to start all over once it was done!

I really enjoyed this. It was beautiful the way the storytelling was laid out. I loved hearing about how she grew up and her self discovery. I listened to this on Libby with the author narrating, highly recommend.
I was so happy to hear in the author notes that they're still BFFs after all these years.

I really enjoyed the story of this book but did not care for the audio reading of the book. The book was read by the author - Jacqueline Woodson. Her monotone delivery was difficult to listen to but because the story was so good I finished it. If the story had not been so good I would have stopped after the first 10 minutes.
Just because a person is a good writer, does not make them a good narrator.

What a stunning book of poetry. What a stunning book of literature. It's supposed to be for middle schoolers, but I believe that this is a book that everyone needs to read. Everyone.
I loved this one. It was such a quick read and I loved reading about Jacqueline Woodson's childhood in Ohio, South Carolina, and New York. It was so informative.
This was beautiful! A glimpse into what it was like to grow up in the South and the North during the 60's and 70's along with Jacqueline's journey to becoming a writer. Plus, it's written in verse which I find delightful. This is my first Jacqueline Woodson read but I think I might look into some more of her work.
So so fantastic!! I love the way she puts words together!
Thank you Jacqueline Woodson

I literally finished the book and returned right back to page one to read it again. Utterly brilliant. And, best of all, genuinely and authentically hopeful.
This book is just EVERYTHING. Jackie Woodson is just the queen of beautiful language--every word is so clearly chosen with care. Her writing is so incredibly immediate, visual, & visceral. This memoir in verse in particular is a work of art--one full of honesty & emotion and utterly lacking in pretension.
I feel especially lucky to have heard Jackie Woodson read selections from this before I read the full book; for many passages, I could hear her voice reading the words in my head and it made the experience even richer.
I think this would be a perfect addition to any middle school (and high school and beyond) English classes to study poetry, memoir, and good writing in general.
