This was a beautifully written, slow burn historical fiction that left me with a lot of emotions to work through.

The book is very character driven and kept my interest, despite the slowness of the plot at times. I loved the characters and the historical aspect. The magical aspect kept things interesting and really added to the underlying tension.

The writing style was not my favorite. There were really long, inner monologue passages that I sometimes skimmed. I prefer straight forward writing styles, but the style did fit the story and highlighted the emotions of certain scenes.

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction or magical realism, but who also reads character driven stories. If they don't, it might try their patience.

Wow! One of the best books I've read! I fully enjoyed this book! It lagged a moment for me a few chapters in but I'm really glad I stuck it out and pushed on. Great character building and vivid story telling! I laughed and cried through this one. I also did the audio version of this book and the narration was perfect!
This story is set during the Mexican revolution and the Spanish flu pandemic! Odd that I should be reading it during the COVID19 Pandemic but it was fully a coincidence as I started the book before the coronavirus hit the US. Timing is everything!

This is a pretty strange/ unique plot about a young boy growing up in Mexico on a sugar cane farm. In the book one of the characters is a disfigured boy who has a connection with bees and nature, and the power to see into the future. Translated from Spanish, the novel is still beautifully written. It’s a bit slow at times but because it’s such a unique story I never felt bored reading it.

Loved the touches of magical realism here and only wish I’d read it in the original Spanish. Particularly poignant as it is set during the 1918 flu, which upends normal life. The overall story was compelling with a particularly gripping character or two.
