A mix between Isabel Allende and the magic realism of Garcia Marquez. You can love the characters so easy and is a perfect portrayal of Southamerican culture. A perfect read
This book is slow and mesmerizing. It takes a long while to unfold, but the cadence and story line is almost meditative. Beautiful and heart-wrenching, have patience and enjoy.

I almost gave this 3/3.5 stars, but I enjoyed the last 3rd-4th the most. I read this after House of the Spirits, which I feel like is the family saga to end all family sagas, so at first I was disappointed with this one (it had a lot to live up to!). I wasn’t very interested in the characters or their story until the middle of the book, but I enjoyed the second half. The writing was quiet and lovely. Makes you think about chosen family and belonging.

This book took me awhile to get into, and at one point I wasn't sure I would stick with it, but I am so glad I did. I turned out to be a beautiful story, and I surprised myself in giving it five stars considering how it started out for me. I highly recommend this book, and if you also find it slow at the start, stick with it. You will be rewarded!
It didn't feel like it was going anywhere. There was a lot of recounting of a lot of death and no real work to pull the pieces together. 25% of a look is too long for neither significant character or plot development to begin.
Very beautiful writing and I love the premise about the boy and his abilities of foresight (his chapters were the most interesting) but I think long and slow books following the developments of one family are not for me.
While it has moments of hope and lightheartedness, I found several themes and moments in this book incredibly heavy and difficult to read. Definitely look at the content warnings before reading.
Moderate: Ableism, Rape, War
