I may or may not be disappointed. Idk yet. Be back when I figure it out.

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

Literally 7.5 hours into this 14+ hour audiobook, and I’m still wondering who the characters are and what the plot is. Nothing has happened. The story rotates perspectives, some in the third person and some in the first person, but it also flips back and forth through different timelines and is completely non-linear. It’s impossible to follow, and other than interesting some tidbits about Mexican history, I still have no storyline. I wanted to like this, but I’ve listened for what would be a normal audiobook length and the life has been drained out of me. DNF @ 50%

Absolutely one of my favorite reads this past year. Can't begin to describe how I felt reading it. As a Mexicana myself I could relate so much in endless ways! Will definitely be looking into reading it in Spanish.

This novel of historical fiction meets magical realism was beautifully translated into English from Spanish. The language is gorgeous and rich, and seems to convey the original intent and concepts perfectly. The non-linear, shifting perspectives took a little bit of getting used to but once I became immersed in the story, that added to the reading experience. While some knowledge of the Mexican Revolution might be useful to understanding the story, there are enough historical details included to help readers unfamiliar with this period of history understand the time and place. This is a novel to be savored.

I selected this as my pick for the 2019 POPSUGAR Ultimate Reading Challenge advanced prompt "an #ownvoices book) and the 2019 BookRiot Read Harder Challenge prompt "an #ownvoices book set in Mexico or Central America."
