Thanking the readers who urged Alice Hoffman to write a prequel to the Practical Magic series because Magic Lessons is the most beautiful novel I’ve read this year (I’m still weeping). Thus, this composition may well have been wrought in ✨pure gold✨ for such is the essence that Alice Hoffman imbues upon each of her books. LOVE.
“This is how you begin in this world. These are the lessons to be learned. Drink chamomile tea to calm the spirit. Feed a cold and starve a fever. Read as many books as you can. Always choose courage. Never watch another woman burn. Know that love is the only answer.”
It’s not even on Goodreads yet but I’m already excited for the 4th installment — namely, The Book of Magic!

I'm torn! This was fine, but it was good! I enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as Practical Magic, which utterly charmed me. This one definitely swept me up and I was moved at times, but I think it was also just a lot sadder than the first one. Also, if you have a familiar, why on earth would you not heed their advice? Justice for Cadin and Keeper, amirite?
Minor: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Confinement
Beautiful story telling. I'm starting with Magic Lessons and making my way through the series in story chronological order (not publishing order). I'm so excited to continue hearing about these wonderful women and what stories they tell.

I love the movie Practical Magic and wanted to read the book/s. Decided to do so in chronological, rather than written, order.
I really enjoyed this, it was an easy listen. I think the narrator should have probably looked up some of the Dutch pronunciations before attempting them but they are few.
I enjoyed the relationships with the familiars in particular and wish that had been shown in more depth.

Practical Magic is a book I love and I normally enjoy Alice Hoffman's writing but I had a very hard time getting invested in Magic Lessons. I found myself often just annoyed with Maria's character. It was slow and fairly predictable. I'm struggling to find what this book really added to the series that wasn't already discussed in Practical Magic.
