That was weird. Fun, but weird.

I think the fact that Manfried looks like what my cat would look like as a tiny fat man doesn't help.

But this was very cute and heartwarming, and fills me with gratefulness for the cat napping on my lap.

The premise is good, but that's pretty much the beginning and end.

The difference between a good SNL sketch and a bad one: A bad one is a premise. The premise is repeated over and over, but not really expanded on, altered as it goes. The funniest part is the setup, and it ends there.

A good SNL sketch...let's look at Chris Farley as Matt Foley: Motivational Speaker.

The premise is that two parents bring a motivational speaker into their home to talk to their kids. That's the setup, but in order to explain why it's funny, you almost have to repeat everything from the sketch. The premise is the launching point, but it goes way beyond the premise.

Manfried feels like all premise to me. And once you get used to "Cats are basically like humans. And their pets are little naked men," you don't get a lot of expansion.

So it's fun, it's a funny idea, but once the idea is clear, you've read it.

The art is very cute but the story feels like it was written by a 7-year-old. I think it's meant to be touching and heartwarming, but it's just bland and predictable. It turns out that just because you're good at drawing, that doesn't mean you're automatically good at writing too.

On the bright side, this does lower the bar for other comic artists to get their foot in the door, I suppose.

In the world of Steve & Manfried cats are people and humans are cats. I read a whole bunch of the 4 panel versions of this book online (with newspaper style silliness and punchlines, not a continuous narrative) which I absolutely love. This book is good, but focuses much much more on Steve and his issues than on the goofy antics of Manfried. I still liked it a lot & the art is fantastic, but I was hoping for a little more goofiness rather than All the feels. Very cute & more plot-y than expected, I'll happily read any and all follow up stories in this world.

Well-suited to the Quirk brand, with moments of sly commentary and amusement. For me, a joke that wore thin with missed opportunity, but many who choose this will be ready to ride along with the diversion.
