Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series is often gritty with unique world building, an emotional landscape that pushes the envelope and characters that have an intense allure which demands attention.
In Angels' Flight we get four novellas (three previously published and one new) to hold us over until the next full length book in her Guild Hunter series. This was my first time reading any of the novellas and although they may be short her ability as a wordsmith allows them to be packed with an emotional charge that allows for full characterization and story arcs. The novellas feature characters that have appeared in previous books but had minor roles. In Angels' Flight we get to know them better and as a bonus some get their happily ever after. With glimpses of Raphael and Elena and more insight into the Guild Hunter’s world this anthology is pure Singh and that’s a very good thing. Reading the four stories in Angels' Flight I was once again drawn into this amazing world and very glad to be there.

I like all these little stories, but beware, they aren’t in timeline or reading order. 3 of the 4 come before Angels Blood but Noel’s story is after book 3, Archangels Consort.

3.5⭐ Overall

Full transparency, I don't normally like short stories. So take my ratings with a grain of salt. I like the idea of short stories, but I find they tend to move too quickly for my taste. Which is definitely a me thing and not the books thing.

1. Angels' Dance ⭐ ⭐ ⭐.5
This is Jessamy and Galen's romance and overall I thought this was sweet. I will say in general I didn't care that much about these side characters. There are definitely side characters I'm itching to get a book about (cough Illium cough). But Galen wasn't really high on the list. This was still super cute and by the end I was buying into their love story.

2. Angels' Judgement ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
I loved Sara and Deacon's story! I will say this is one of the examples of the plot/romance moving too quickly for me. But I still ship these 2 so hard. I love me a strong, BA female heroine and Sara is definitely that. And I love how Deacon supporting the hell out of her. It was good stuff.

3. Angels' Pawn ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
I think this one was my favorite. Which is crazy - because there was not a single steamy scene. I don't even recognize myself anymore... This followed Ashwini and Janvier and their shenanigans in the bayou. The sexual tension between these two had me physically sweating. I need a dozen more stories about characters. And they need to kiss. Or I might explode.

4. Angels' Wolf ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Ugh this was really disappointing actually. This is Noel and Nimra's romance and honestly when I started this, I didn't recognize either character. Definitely took me a few pages to place them. But this one actually started off really strong for me - I loved the slow build and watching them open up to each other. But the timing was just off for me. The build up was slow, but the transition was so fast you could have missed it if you blinked. One second they're friends and the next Noel is full alpha male, I'm gonna kill that angel for looking at you. I just never really bought into their feelings, so overall, meh.

I was so happy when I got this! give me anything from Nalini's Guild Hunter world and I will happily read it. NS always impresses with her beautiful language and world building. I will be reviewing each story from the anthology individually.

Angel's Pawn Ashwini and Janvier's story

4/5

This is a great beginning for the anthology and I really enjoyed it. The chemistry and witty banter between the couple was fresh and gives insight to their relationship outside of the main Guild Hunters series. Plot line wise, it was intriguing and to be honest, in terms of action, this would be the best of the four. It also showed the characters true feelings and emotions, reading their story gives a deeper understanding to these side characters for the series.

Angel's Judgement Sara and Deacon's story

4/5

This story gives the reader insight into Sara's life, we know her as the tough but loving guild director and bestie to Elena. I love how this short but satisfying tale told the reader how Deacon and Sara met and fell in love. Throw in some action and mystery and you got yourself another great Guild Hunter story!

Angel's Wolf Noel and Nimra's story

4/5

Noel is scarred permanently and has been transfered to the steamy and exotic Louisiana which is home and territory of the beautiful but deadly angel ruler, Nimra. Noel is full of shadows, Nimra is instantly attracted to his cruel beauty. An attempt on Nimra's life is the reason Noel is sent to her and as she spends time with him, she begins to feel almost human, she shares her love for animals and Noel sees the compassionate side of the striking angel. There is hidden intrigue and betrayal rule this story. The culprit was unexpected. It's sweet to see Nimra leaning on Noel as he does her and I think they make a lovely couple, this has to be my fave story of the four.

Angel's Dance Jessamy and Galen's story

3.5/5

To be honest, I was looking forward to this couple's story. Yes, learning about how Jessamy grew up in the Refuge and Galen's childhood in a warrior's court was intriguing but I felt that their relationship moved so fast, Galen saw her once and again, then begins to feel for her. Not to say they make a horrible couple, they are perfect for each other and Galen brings out the true Jessamy but I think the story should have had more time to develop. I did enjoy a look into the past of the Guild Hunter world though.

Update: 9 Oct 2021

I read this anthology in 2012 and I just realised after hearing about a similar character from a scarred romance recommendation: angel who got his wings injured, that Jessamy would be considered a disabled angel because she was born with a twisted wing and can't fly.

Overall a nice collection to read and Nalini is a wonderful writer who spins tales of fantasy worlds that pull readers in.

Angels' Flight contains 4 Guild Hunter Novellas by Nalini Singh, as per normal she did NOT disappoint. 5 stars

These stories only make me want to read more of this series, she brings to life the lives of some of the other known series regulars:

Angels' Dance, is the story of Jessamy and Galen; Jessamy was born with a deformed wing and will never be able to spread her wings and fly. She's lived a long time and made a life for herself as the teacher of the young and keeper of Angelic history. Galen is a warrior but he sees in Jessamy what others miss.

Angels' Judgment, is the New York Guild Director's love story Sarah Hazaz is Elena's BFF, before she take the job of director she has to hunt one of her own. The Slayer is sent to helper, Deacon is a lone wolf but together they are fire.

Angels' Pawn, is a story of the Guild Hunter, Ashwini and the vampire Janvier, who make her want to give up some of her rules.

Angel's Wolf, Rapheal has sent Noel to work for Angel Nimra, although its called a promotion it feels like a demotion. Noel's physical self has recovered from the torture he suffered recently but his mind is still fractured. Nimra is a beautiful, dangerous and strong angel that rules New Orleans with an iron fist. But she needs Noel's help in routing out a killer.

I switched between the audiobook and ebook. The narrator did a great job. This is 4 novellas told in the Guild Hunter series world and it was nice to catch up with some of the characters or learn backstories.
