They just finished filming this in Pittsburgh and my godchild was an extra in it, so I had to read it. I'm not sure that I "got" it. Who was Charlie writing to? What was wrong with Charlie? What exactly are the perks of being a wallflower?
Well, after reading some of the other reviews, I guess I'm just too old to appreciate this book.
So, I finally got to see the movie and it's the rare case where I liked the movie better than the book. The movie was sweeter and less dirty-feeling than the book. The book made me feel like I had to take a bath. Sort of like "Go Ask Alice". A not-at-all nice coming of age story.

I have tried to read it many times but I can't really bring myself to do so. I'm moving on, since I really want to read other books as well.

For me, this book did not live up to the hype. I've always heard about how great this book is, how it changed the people who read it, how deep it was, etc. It tried way too hard to be nostalgic for a specific time period and felt kind of fake. I might feel differently if I had read it in my teens, but I appreciate other YA set in high school so I think this just wasn't that great of a book.
Touched my heart. Definitely one of my favorite books, deserves all the hype.
It may seem unlikely for someone of my age, but I've never read a YA book with such a cult following, and I may be biased because this was my first, but nevertheless I'm glad it was.
Chbosky provides us with a charming recollection of Charlie's experience over two years in the from of letters which often directly address the reader, submerging us in the story that unfolds before our eyes.
If anyone else is looking for a YA book to start off with, I definitely recommend this.
