3.3 AVERAGE

I feel like I am giving a lot of books 3/4 stars at the moment, but I can’t help it, I am lucky to be having a joyous run or really good reads at the moment (with the exception of Cloudstreet)! So here goes with another review of a 3.5 star book and a silent prayer that this streak of good reads doesn’t end anytime soon.

This was a gripping, smart thriller centred on adult female relationships that left me with an unbelievable desire for a margarita. Part of what I believe made Girls’ Night Out such a good read was the focus on female friendships and how they change over a lifetime which is something that I didn’t know that I needed from a story until now.

One downfall of this novel was the jumping of perspectives happened a little bit too often before I actually really got to grips with the different characters which kind of threw the flow slightly, and even though the experiences of the women were all different, their voices had a similarity to them – which does happen when people are friends for 20 years!

Overall, this would be a wonderful beach read, or by the fire in the middle of a cold winter when you are dreaming of Mexico.

A big thank you to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for the free copy in exchange for an unbiased review.

Friends since college, Ashley, Lauren and Natalie are estranged after an argument a year ago. Thinking it might make them bond and rekindle their friendship, Ashley books a girly holiday in Talum, Mexico.
But even after they are reunited, things are strained. Ashely and Natalie are partners in a successful company, BlowMe. Revlon have made an offer to buy it off them for a substantial sum of money. Ashley is adamant she doesn't want to sell, while Natalie does. Ashley and Lauren fell out after Lauren's abusive husband died - Lauren blamed Ashley for his death and the hadn't spoken since.
Things are tense, so when Natalie wakes up on a sun lounger on a beach after a girls' night out, wet through with no idea how she got there she is worried. When she gets back to their room to find Ashley is missing she instantly knows something is wrong.
This is a real page turner! Told from the viewpoint of each of the women and flipping between different time periods, it makes you want to keep reading quicker to find out what happened to Ashley! Lauren and Natalie are both suspicious of each other and I really had no idea until the "reveal" what the outcome was going to be. A great fast paced thriller perfect for summer!
Thank you to the authors and ed public relations for my copy.

This book was raved about on a reading podcast I listen to, and I was itching for a thriller. Consumed on my kindle.

Overall, I wasn't impressed by this. It feels like the authors hate women. The narrators, 3 women, have all been best friends for years but essentially hate each other, and there's not much tenderness at all. Every time I put this book down, I wanted to sigh "women, amirite". While some female friendships can obviously be fraught, this book did not show any positives and started to feel redundant which grated. This book has momentum, but because of these dynamics, I wished it were shorter. Didn't love the ending.

Wouldn't recommend.

Ashley, Natalie and Lauren have been friends for many years and Ashley and Natalie own a successful company together. Ashley has asked Natalie and Lauren to go away for a girl’s week in Tulum, Mexico in hopes of repairing the fractures in their friendship. A year previous, Lauren’s husband, Geoff, passed away from a heart attack. At Geoff’s funeral, Lauren and Ashley had a massive argument and they have not spoken since. Ashley is hoping that not only will they get their friendship back on track but that she and Natalie can come to a mutual decision regarding their company as Revlon has made an offer to purchase it. Natalie, for reasons that Ashley is not aware of, desperately needs for the company to be sold and Ashley, for reasons that Natalie doesn’t understand, desperately needs to hang onto it.

Shortly after they arrive in Tulum, Ashley meets a man named Marco. He quickly insinuates himself into the threesome, much to the dismay of Natalie and Lauren. Natalie and Lauren do not trust Marco and feel that he is becoming too familiar with Ashley, who has a husband and two children at home.

On their last night in Tulum, Lauren and Ashley have words again which causes Lauren to go back to the hotel. Marco wants Ashley to go on an adventure with him and Natalie doesn’t want Ashley to go on her own with a strange man in a strange country after drinking for several hours. Eight hours later, Ashley goes missing and Natalie wakes up outside, soaked to the skin with no memory of what happened the night before.

The story is told in multiple points of view using flashbacks to divulge the whole story. This was a fun, fast read where at times, I couldn’t put it down. There certainly were times that I just shook my head at the three women – what were they thinking???? Getting continuously drunk in a strange country, with a strange man and going off on adventures with him in the middle of the night ….. no surprise when something went wrong, but unfortunately we hear stories like this all the time in real life when people go away somewhere tropical on vacation.

Girls weekend away will never be the same again.
I can honestly say I was surprised at the end.

A story of three women taking a trip to Tulum, Mexico to save their 20 year friendship. From the beginning they each have problems. These characters give me a little "real housewives vibe," however I had to keep reading to see how this story was going to go. I liked this one!
I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fast paced read.

Really enjoyed this one.....kept me going until the last line! Well written and once again, you could not tell that there were two writers! These ladies make a great team!!
Definitely helped that each chapter had the name of which of the 3 main character's the perspective was going to be as well as it's relation to "the event." That and the story jumping around in time really kept me turning the pages! It was not a bother that the story jumped around in time from chapter to chapter as it can be in some books.....here, it helped build the story and the suspense. I'm curious as to were M went.
