3.3 AVERAGE

I seem to be on a roll with books at the moment so I was a little apprehensive that my standards incredibly higher than usual but Girls Night Out was another absolutely amazing read that I practically inhaled in two sittings.

When Ashley, Natalie and Lauren embark on a girls trip to Tulum, beyond the beaches and margaritas there is a real reason they are there beyond having fun - to repair their friendship that has been under strain. Ashley and Natalie own a successful hair tool comparing, BloMe, and with Revlon swooping in to offer to buy the company, one wants to sell while the other doesn’t. It has caused some friction between their relationship and they hope by the end of the trip, they can reconsider each other’s feelings and it can all be resolved. Lauren, who often feels like the third wheel in their friendship, hasn’t spoken to Ashley and Natalie for over a year but wants to also get back on track after tragically losing her husband a year prior. But when a girls night out goes terribly wrong, Ashley goes missing. With Natalie not being able to recall the night - they are determined to find their friend.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book. It was a proper girly, beach read and I secretly wished I was in Tulum sipping on some cocktails with this read to accompany me. I don’t want to give tooooo much of the plot away but it’s definitely engrossing and I managed to fly through it pretty quickly. Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke are fantastic writers. The plot flowed at a nice pace and although you were keen to find out what happened to Natalie, it was nice to read a mystery book without having tons of characters to suspect or be pulled in all different directions. It was just so enjoyable and well written.

Thank you to the publisher and @netgally for giving me the opportunity to read this. If your headed on a beach holiday this summer, this would be the perfect by the sea or pool read. I’ll definitely be recommending it to my friends.

Exciting read!

Whoa! I didn’t see that coming!! Fast-paced read from different characters’ perspectives. Often wondering if the character is being truthful or not.

Told in alternating POVs, Girls' Night Out focuses on the estranged friendship of three women who go on a trip together to try and salvage what they can of their relationship. One of them goes missing and the other two do not know what happened. Putting together the pieces weaves a story that felt lacking in completion and somewhat lazy towards the end. It was a wild ride but it wasn't anything new to this genre.

*I received this book in exchange for a review. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher.

This was such a snooze. I kept waiting for it to get exciting or for a twist… but nothing.

Lisa and Liz really know how to write a thriller. Their second in this genre, Girls’ Night Out is suspenseful from the start. The story alternates between three friends- Ashley, Lauren, and Natalie- and the days leading up to, and after, Ashley’s mysterious disappearance. In Tulum, Mexico. That’s right, these girls went out, drank too much, and a friend disappears in MEXICO. Cue panic. And confusion. Because one of them remembers absolutely nothing, the other is clueless, and this was no ordinary trip. Tension is high and feelings are dangerously close to the surface. They came on this trip to mend what’s broken. But they wouldn’t do anything to actually hurt one another….would they?

Girls’ Night Out kept me captivated from page one. The three friends have distinct personalities and their own individual issues, so despite the alternating voices and time line, it was surprisingly easy to follow and not lose track of what was going on. Speaking of personalities, I honestly could not stand Ashley (and maybe you’re not supposed to?). She read as incredibly narcissistic, but yet completely clueless as to how her behavior affected those close to her. Her character reminded me of a quote from a show called Justified. Its main character, Raylan Givens, says, "If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you're the asshole." Well, Ashley was kind of an asshole. With the best of intentions. I think. She was a conundrum.

Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke have themselves another amazing whodunit with this one. I stayed up late into the night, with complete disregard for sleep, in order to finish and it was worth every sleep deprived minute. Until literally, the very. last. page. Have the caffeine ready after this one. You’ll pull an all-nighter to finish, too.

I received this book as a giveaway. The story centers on a group of friends, Ashley, Lauren and Natalie, who all visit Mexico on a girls' getaway. The author uses viewpoints of all of the friends and switches between past and present times around the time that Ashley goes missing. I found this to be confusing and boring at times. Also, the information about why she goes missing was very anti-climatic. The story shows promise but the ending and viewpoints made it very predictable and confusing at times.

Natalie, Ashley, and Lauren have been friends for twenty years, but ugly fissures have taken a toll on the foundation that once glued them together. Ashley and Lauren haven’t spoken for a year after a tragedy drove a knife between them, and Natalie and Ashley are on opposite ends of a major decision. The two friends are also business partners, their once start-up company now mainstream with a buyout offer from Revlon. Natalie wants to sell, Ashley is opposed. Each has hidden personal reasons for their stance. In an effort to repair their friendship, Ashley invites Natalie and Lauren on a vacation in Mexico—sun, beaches, margaritas, and good times. But once they arrive it becomes apparent how far apart they’ve drifted. Toss in an enigmatic stranger who takes a shine to Ashley and offers to act as a personal tour guide and the three friends find the minimal glue holding them together quickly deteriorating.

The book starts with Natalie waking up on the beach, after a night of partying, her clothing soaked, with no memory of what happened the night before. One thing is apparent, however—Ashley is missing. Told from multiple viewpoints and moving back and forth between the present and the nights leading up to Ashley’s disappearance, the reader becomes privy to how this vacation—meant to heal relationships—went very wrong.

I was hooked on the dynamics of the three women, their backstories, and their efforts (and non-efforts) involved in salvaging their friendships. The book lost me a bit when it delved into Mayan beliefs and made a major player out of Marco, the mysterious local who beguiles Ashley. This is one of those books where everyone is flawed, capable of doing despicable things. Most of the book holds up well, keeping the mystery intriguing, although the ending fizzles a bit. Could have been better, but still entertaining, and an easy read. I can see the movie in my head.

A sunny Mexico vacation, 3 friends on the rocks, and a mysterious man - this book has all the makings of a perfect pool read! I throughly enjoyed this book and found it fun and entertaining. I can see people not liking the ending, but it did not disappoint me.

Suspenseful and emotion filled, Girls' Night Out tells of a girl's trip gone wrong from three friend's point of view. I found myself saying just one more chapter every night to find out what happens next! Liz and Lisa deliver another great easy read.

First of all, thank you so much to Sian, Annabelle and Lake Union Publishing for getting in contact and asking if I'd like to participate in the blog tour for this thrilling novel and for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review. Well, where do I start? You know when a book comes along at exactly the right time in your life and for some reason or another, something either about the characters or content moves you? Step right up, Girls' Night Out. I happen to have returned this year from a once in a lifetime holiday to Mexico which was a necessary process of healing for me after a traumatic eighteen months in my life. Our girls in the novel go on such a holiday themselves and it was wonderful to read about a country, and indeed specific places that I knew so well from my own experience, it only made the novel and the difficult situation experienced by our female leads all the more endearing and exciting.

I'll just pop off a very basic synopsis here but to be perfectly honest, you really need to go into this novel without knowing very much at all. It's the story of three friends: Natalie, Ashley and Lauren. Natalie and Ashley have a very successful business together but are at loggerheads at the moment after Revlon make them an offer to buy their company. Ashley and Lauren also have a very tense and fragile relationship which stems from a resentful argument that happened just after Lauren's husbands death. Ashley has arranged the trip to Mexico to try and re-connect with both Natalie and Lauren and repair the cracks in their friendships. However, things don't go exactly to plan and when Ashley mysteriously disappears without a trace, Natalie and Lauren must confront more things in their past than they were ever prepared to challenge.

So, as I mentioned, I immediately leapt at the chance to read this book, particularly as I had just spent time in that exact area but even better besides, this book actually exceeded my expectations. It's easy to read, obviously exciting and action-packed, has an air of mystery and intrigue that is undeniable and instantly captivating and I was simply a willing participant in the mysterious ride of what exactly happened to Ashley. The narrative jumps across time-lines and narrators from each female lead, to the days leading up to Ashley's disappearance then fast forwards to the present time where the girls are desperately trying to piece together what went on and then finally, to that fateful night itself. Page by page, the tension continues to creep up notch by notch and by the end, it becomes a furiously page-turning journey where I just HAD to have all the answers to all my (many!) questions.

I wouldn't necessarily say the authors throw multiple red herrings the readers way, it's not a twisty kind of book in my opinion. It's more about the mystery behind what happened, focusing heavily on the friendships between the girls, their marriages, their business relationships and a rogue factor that may or may not have had bearing on the precarious situation that Ashley finds herself in. For me, I just enjoyed this book for what it was - a fun and fascinating musing on the nature of relationships and how much of a devastating effect a sour element can create between previously intimate friends.
