Okay I am not the most perceptive person, so I almost never see the plot twists coming, but damn. I like spacing out the books in a series, but I have to say, I'm eager to start the next book.
Just as enjoyable as the previous books in the series! It kept me guessing until the end — always a good thing in a murder mystery — and kept a good pace throughout. I love the character of Jimmy Perez and how nuanced he is.
For the most part, this is my favorite so far of the Shetland novels. The case is really interesting and Jimmy is on his own for most of the investigation and does a great job of getting to know the various suspects and witnesses. I was really shocked about a development at the end and was sad about the direction the plot took. It is still a well-written, complex mystery set in an intriguing location.

What an ending - poor Jimmy.
Beyond that, the atmosphere on Fair Isle was pretty toxic and Cleeves flirted with the locked room genre (but only flirted). Getting to meet Jimmy's parents was interesting and at the same time rather annoying - what is it with the gruff island men? Peter May does the same thing! I'm not looking for warm fuzzies, but this is overly stoic.
