Interesting premise followed by slow buildup and then a rushed, sloppy ending.

A slow-burn psychological suspense novel about a prison psychologist whose new patient is his high school crush. Tense and compelling.

Main character made me feel icky. I had a bad experience with a therapist violating my trust a few months after I put this on my tbr, and I thought I was ok to read this now. Even though its a different situation, I was not. Also, weird implied pedophilia on page 1?

Frank Lundquist screwed up; he was a child psychologist in New York and he misread one of his clients who killed his little sister. Now Frank works in a women's prison, trying to reclaim his life after his wife divorced him. When Miranda Greene walks into his office, Frank is overwhelmed: here was his childhood crush, sitting right in front of him. Miranda was involved in a robbery that ended up in homicide and now she is in prison; Frank wants to help her, but can he? As the book slowly reveals, there is a lot of twisting psychological game-playing taking place. The writing is adequate, but the plot is quite baroque and no one wins in the end.

Overall, I found this book to be disappointing. The plot line promised to be interesting and origins, but there was not much there beyond the blurb. I wish the story had gone more into the character development for Frank, as those few brief passages detailing his fall from grace in commercial counseling were the best part of the book.
It felt like this could have been a really good thriller if it had been worked on a bit more.
