This book felt like a whole line of LMM's short stories with Anne narrating. Honestly, I had to skip some of the stories (Cousin Earnestine or whatever her name was?). The only ongoing story of any interest was little Elizabeth next door.

I don't think we ever heard Gilbert speak in this book (not that he speaks much in ANY book) but still...

Anywhoo. I'm ready for the House of Dreams!

A return to the real Anne, the one that seemed to disappear briefly in book 3. Many moments that made me laugh and smile, and tear up. The letter format of the first few chapters threw me off a bit, but the transition to the narrative format was smooth and evened things out. Rebecca Dew was a highlight for me.

As much as I really wanted to like this book, I feel like nearly all (if not all of it) was side plot that could've been left out and was hard for me to continue picturing Anne's world in.

And gilbert wasn't really in it, nor any of her past friends or family, so it just felt like a different story entirely.

Easily my favourite Anne book so far on this adult reread! And iirc, even as a kid. Truly an underrated gem.
slow-paced

A painful read. Maybe it could have been better if we had seen any letters from Gilbert to Anne instead of just hers to him? When they were together, we are only told about it in passing. Too little Gilbert and Diana, she’s only mentioned once. Worst in the series thus far. I will continue to see them be married.
