This was a great audiobook and the narrator was spot on. The story follows the revenge troup with a returning soldier getting pulled into shady back-door government dealings. Following the murder of his family but unknown assailants our MC vows to hunt down the bad guys. While I enjoyed the story, it's not a genre I read often so I have no plans to read the rest of this lengthy series.

Having enjoyed the series on Amazon Prime Video, I decided to read this novel that the series is based on. I enjoyed this book as well. I just wanted to give warning to any other potential readers, like myself, that have already seen the show, and now want to read the book.
It's commonplace for movies/shows to not precisely match the books they are based on due to various reasons when developing a screenplay, one expects changes, but in this case, there were a plethora of changes to details, and even a number of changes to major plot points. I almost didn't recognize some of the characters in this book when comparing to the series.
If you can see past that, then you will still enjoy the book as well.

The Washington Times

Overall I really enjoyed the storyline in this book. There was a little too much gun-porn for my taste, but I’m sure it resonates with some. The author also seemed to over-describe unnecessary things. These things didn’t keep me from really enjoying the story though. I’m looking forward to book 2.

this book, at it’s basics, is a revenge story.  It’s no Count of Monte Cristo but there’s a lot of parallels between James Reece and Edmond Dantes.  Both are complicated men and just painting them with a simplistic brush would be doing either a disservice and missing the point.  There’s a lot of depth to this story but it’s hampered somewhat by the prose, which is forgivable as this is the author’s first published work.

Jack Carr’s prose is simplistic and functional.  It’s obvious that the author knows his subject matter intimately.  The functional nuts and bolts of the story is well wrought and through, creating a serviceable military and political thriller that has a lot to say about what motivates people in power.  However,  the prose is mostly what gets this book knocked down from a higher rating as it can be overly detailed and infodump (which I’m not opposed to but it got repetitive).

The story is fast paced with Reece as a great narrator as he seeks vengeance for his wronged brothers in arms and for his family.  Comparisons are inevitable to the books of Brad Thor or Tom Clancy.  If you like either of those writers, this book is for you.  There is violence and Reece’s state of mind is predictably drowning in grief and anger.  If those things scare you, this isn’t your book.

Overall, would recommend.  I’ll be picking up the next one in the series and continuing.  I’m curious what happens next to John Reese.
